The summer solstice was last weekend, which means that this week is officially the lightest of the year, with almost eighteen hours of daylight each day.
If, like me, you have an east-facing bedroom, that means that you too may currently be suffering from severe sleep deprivation caused by waking at roughly 03:57 in the morning.
Yep, that’s the current time of dawn in the UK, and about the time that light starts entering my east-facing bedroom window, which is at least three hours before I actually want to wake up!
As such, I’ve been on a mission to find ways to make my bedroom darker, and after testing out multiple failed solutions, I think I’ve finally found a blackout blind that *actually* works. The solution is an encased blackout blind.

Yep, if you too have been searching for a way to block out light from a room – whether that’s trying to prevent early morning wake-ups or to darken a children’s bedroom so your kids aren’t awake past their bedtimes – you’ll know it’s far easier said than done.
There are hundreds of blackout solutions on the market, from super affordable tricks like this £5 temporary no-drill blackout blind from Dunelm to numerous blackout curtain ideas. But the one thing I’ve found most of these have in common, is that they don’t block out *all* of the light.
Yes, they make a lot more difference than a non-blackout window covering, but daylight still has a way of creeping around the edges of even the darkest blackout blind or glowing brightly at the top and bottom of blackout curtains.

All achieve what your average blackout roller blind can’t. That is, eliminating the light that seeps around the sides of the blind by enclosing the blind in a frame that fits snugly into your window reveal, Hey presto, all light is blocked.
247 Blinds
Ultra Blackout Blind
A fully enclosed frame ensures no light leakage around the edges, plus the pleated honeycomb fabric acts as thermal barrier to keep a room cooler in the summer and cosier in the winter.
blinds2go
TotalShade Blackout Thermal Blind
Blinds2go’s TotalShade blind also acts as a 2-in-1 solution to block out light and heat in the summer months.
BlocOut
Smart Blackout Blind
This deluxe version of BlocOut’s encased blackout blind can be operated by a phone App or voice control, with the ability to set scheduled opening and closing times.
One additional plus factor I hadn’t considered in my hunt for more shuteye in the morning, was the cooling effect an encased blind can have on a room. Something especially relevant to me, as my dormer bedroom gets the full heat of the sun during the day.
If you opt for an option like the 247 Blinds Ultra Blackout Blind, its pleated fabric has an added benefit – its total coverage doesn’t just block the sun’s light, it also blocks the sun’s warmth thanks to a thermally-efficient honeycomb layer that traps the air to add better insulation to a window.
This means a cooler bedroom in the summer, and the reverse in the winter – its layered fabric will form a barrier to keep the warmth in a room rather than it escaping through the window for cosier winters.

And it seems I’m not alone in my new appreciation for the merits of an encased blind.
As one reviewer of the £29.50 enclosed Touch BlocOut blind says, ‘I’m so lucky to be woken each morning with the sun streaming through my window. Although this is not so welcome at 4.30 am during the summer months. Having tried sun filter film, thick curtains, and a blind. The sun found its way in. Then to my extreme delight I ordered this blind. It works. My room is dark and cool and I sleep peacefully until 8am.’
‘The lighter mornings and evenings made it harder to get my children to sleep,’ says another reviewer. ‘We tried curtains, but even the blackout versions let so much light in around the edge. These encased blackout blinds have a track down the side which the blind fits into, meaning they don’t let any light in at all. Total darkness!’
If you’re sick and tired (literally) of dawn wake-ups or the kids staying awake until all hours, this is one bedroom essential I highly recommend getting on your wishlist. If it means a blissful three hours extra sleep in the morning, I’m all in favour.
If, like me, you live with someone who a) loves shoes, and b) doesn’t love tidying up after themselves, then you’ll appreciate just how messy shoes can make a room look.
Take my 12-year-old son, for example, who has a penchant for footwear. This means that every birthday and Christmas, he asks for a new pair of trainers, and he saves up his pocket money to buy second-hand trainers, shoes, and boots on Vinted.
Which is all very well, however, he only has one pair of feet! Meaning that for most of my life, I’m having to navigate his bedroom with pairs of loose, messy footwear strewn across the floor.
That is, until he showed me the bedroom storage idea many of his favourite TikTokkers use to store their sneakers in; a set of clear plastic stacking shoe boxes that mean you can easily see what shoes are inside each one.
I was impressed. His room isn’t that big, but this looked like a small bedroom storage idea that could really work, so I set to work trying to find some options that are available in the UK. In the end, I narrowed our choices down to two main contenders.
SONGMICS
Pack of 6 Clear Door Shoe Boxes
This set of six clear stacking shoe boxes from SONGMICS has great reviews that mention them being easy to assemble, stacking well, and being perfect for shoe storage.
Amazon
SIMPDIY Large Shoe Storage Box
I also found this Amazon option, which is cheaper, but my son preferred the clear plastic casing of the SONGMICS option, and we liked the wider opening at the front.
In the end, we opted for the SONGMICS option. I like the fact that the SONGMICS set stacks together perfectly and also has the door-opening so you don’t need to remove the boxes on top to access the shoes. I was also impressed by the reviews and mention of how sturdy they were.
And when they turned up, my son was equally impressed. They arrived flat-packed, but the side of each box is labelled to avoid confusion, meaning that the assembly is really straightforward. Despite the fact that I’m definitely not a flatpack pro, we assembled the whole set of six in less than half an hour.

When constructed, they stack well, meaning my son can have them in a variety of stacking combinations. I’ve seen some integrated into wardrobe storage ideas and hidden away, but we opted for leaving his favourite pairs out on display.
They feel sturdy and are large enough for him to fit two pairs of most of his shoes in each one; he’s a size 5 shoe, which means he can get two pairs in side by side. Although you can fit up to a size 11 shoe inside.
Larger shoes just need to go sideways on, meaning you can only get one pair in (unless they’re thin pumps or flipflops, which could be doubled up).
When the boxes are in position in his bedroom and filled with the pile of shoes that had previously been littering his floor, I’m impressed. And he’s over the moon that the clear stacking boxes stop his shoes from getting dusty and keep them organised.
The magnetic closing front doors mean that it’s easy to quickly access them to get shoes in or out.
TikTok gets a lot of flak, but I never expected it would solve my son’s bedroom shoe storage problem as well as it has. The only problem is, I’m probably going to need to buy more pretty soon as his trainer collection continues to expand!
If you live in a part of the UK that’s currently experiencing a heatwave, then by this stage of the hot weather, you’ve probably already tried every trick under the sun to cool down your sleep setup.
Figuring out how to stay cool in bed is no joke when the temperatures climb, but bedding experts say there’s one simple mistake that can lead to a lot of unnecessary overheating.
The good news? That mistake is also simple to fix, and I’ve found a way to solve this common problem for under £10 (depending on the size of your bed). So what’s the simple mistake likely to cause unnecessary overheating in bed during hot weather? It’s all down to baggy bottom sheet.
‘As the temperature rises this week, even the small things can make a big difference in how well you sleep,’ explains Adeel Ul-Haq, sleep expert and co-founder of Divan Beds. ‘There’s one small detail that many people overlook, and it could be the reason you feel restless and uncomfortable.’
‘Having the right size bedding can help keep you cool over the next few days,’ explains Adeel. That’s because ‘sheets that bunch or wrinkle can limit the airflow around the body and create hotspots.’
There can be a lot of reasons our bedding is too baggy, but the most likely cause is that we’re using a sheet that doesn’t fit our mattress, or a duvet cover that doesn’t fit our duvet. Fabric can also play a part, I’ve found heavier materials like linen or bamboo duvet covers can ‘droop’ off the duvet and pool around my body in ways a lighter fabric, like a cotton percale, doesn’t.

When it comes to sheets, baggy or excess fabric can be one reason why some people prefer fitted rather than flat sheets.
‘Fitted sheets make life easy,’ says Molly Freshwater, co-founder of Secret Linen Store. ‘Pop them on, and they stay put. A fitted sheet will stay neatly in place no matter how much you toss and turn.’
‘Choosing a fitted sheet that hugs your mattress without bunching up is going to allow the air to pass around your body freely, keeping you cool so that you can rest and get a good night’s sleep,’ agrees Adeel.
So if you have a double mattress, make sure you’re putting a double fitted sheet on it, not a king-size.
Also, bear in mind that fitted sheets come in a variety of depths. If you opt for a sheet depth deeper than your mattress depth, this can result in excess fabric that bunches around your body during the night, trapping heat. Instead, you want your sheet to fit snugly to your mattress.
I’ve had this problem before, but there’s an easy fix. Use a tape measure or ruler to measure your mattress depth and then make sure you double-check the small print on the fitted sheet you’re buying to make sure it matches.
I’ve found it can be easy to miss this detail in the overwhelm of most highstreet bedding departments! Most mattresses are somewhere between 20 and 25cm, but more expensive mattresses are often deeper, measuring 30cm+.

The good news is that a new fitted sheet won’t set you back too much. If you want a cooler sleep, just make sure you’re opting for a cotton or linen sheet rather than anything made from polyester or ‘polycotton’.
These are the most budget-friendly 100% cotton sheets I’ve come across. They’re also available in five depths – 25, 28, 32, 35, and 40cm – so you can really make sure you nail the right fit for your mattress and avoid any heat-trapping bagginess. Even better, there are over 40 colour options to choose from so it should be no problem to find a shade that compliments your duvet cover.
Dunelm
Portloe Gingham Woven Cotton Fitted Sheet
Whilst it may not seem like the most exciting purchase, a well-fitting fitted sheet doesn’t have to be boring. This 100% cotton option combines two trends in one – the recent trend for patterned fitted sheets and the gingham bedding trend that all the best-dressed beds are wearing this season.
If you have a little more cash to splash, then the long, fine fibres used in these 200 thread count Egyptian cotton fitted sheets deliver added softness and durability. This option fits a mattress up to 30cm, or there’s the Egyptian Cotton Fitted Sheets in a Deep that fit mattresses up to 36cm.
Of course, if you already have sheets and simply want to fix bagginess issues, you could opt for a sheet strap instead, like these £6.99 bed sheet clips from Amazon.
They’re specifically designed to stop a baggy fitted sheet from coming off your mattress, which can be a particular problem if your sheet is a little older and has been through the washing machine a number of times. In this case, the elastic may be worn and have lost its spring, which can be another cause of ill-fitted sheets.
All in all, a snug fit is key if we want our bedding to do its job and remain as cool as possible during the hot summer nights.
Habitat and Morris & Co have added more pieces to their hugely popular collaboration, and if you thought you had enough bedding from the last drop, think again, as now there are even more stunning sets to add to your trolley.
Habitat x Morris & Co had us all in awe after their last bedding collection dropped, with our Sleep Editor, Amy Lockwood, declaring the collection was hands down the best bedding she’d seen in the past year.
Once again, don’t expect to be disappointed, as the latest collection features more stunning and contemporary takes on William Morris’ iconic prints. And these are the pieces I can’t wait to add to my basket.
William Morris prints have a timeless quality that appeals to any home decor trend, and Habitat x Morris & Co has taken these prints and given them a contemporary update to suit modern homes.
Take the Golden Lily Blue Bedding Set (£40 at Habitat) which happens to be my favourite from the range. It’s easily one of the most recognisable of the designs, featuring a clash of soft powder blues (which happens to be one of the year’s biggest colour trends), pops of coral and a vintage yellow, all interconnected in a stunning floral pattern.
It sounds intense, I know, but what Habitat has nailed is expressing the essence of William Morris’ prints without them being overpowering. The colours are muted and the material is high-quality for a luxe look and feel. Being 100% cotton, I’d also argue it is one of the best bedding sets for summer, as cotton is a breathable material, helping to keep you cool.
The new range also features some stunning floral pillows that are well suited to any bedroom or living room idea, as well as the lovely Marigold Faux Mohair Throw (£24), which makes you want to snuggle up on the sofa (despite it being summer!).

There’s no better feeling than finally getting into bed after a long day. And, for some, there’s no worse feeling than when the morning alarm rings and bursts your bubble of restful bliss.
Waking up early in the morning can be tricky, especially if your sleep the night before doesn’t leave you feeling particularly refreshed. This explains why so many of us just can’t resist the urge to press ‘snooze’ one too many times.
In fact, a recent study found that, based on a global sample, people snooze their alarms for around 11 minutes on average each morning before waking.
Does this sound like you? Don’t fret. Even if you’re a natural night owl, there is one simple bedroom design trick to become a morning person that experts recommend if you find yourself sleeping in too late each morning.
The expert-approved design trick
When it comes to bedroom ideas, we’re often told to pick colour palettes that soothe the mind and create a relaxing environment for when we unwind in the evening. While this advice still stands for the four walls, it can be beneficial to paint your ceiling – or fifth wall – in a brighter colour for a mood-boosting wake-up call.
Painting your ceiling a different colour from your walls is not a new design idea. In fact, it has quickly become a popular design feature popping up in rooms across the home, thanks to recent trends like colour drenching and dopamine decor. But, more than just an eye-catching design feature, this simple trick can also make it easier to get up each morning.
‘The brightness of colour palettes and the associations we have with certain colours can significantly influence our sleep quality,’ says Dave Gibson, founder of The Sleep Site. ‘Technically, a ceiling that you regard as bright and energising can help wake you up, especially when it reflects the bright sunlight which we need to stimulate us in the morning,’ he adds.

‘Painting the ceiling is a clever design trick that’s gaining more and more attention,’ agrees Marianne Shillingford, creative director and colour expert at Dulux. ‘Using calming colours on the walls helps ease the transition into sleep, while a ceiling painted in a lighter, more energising tone can subtly stimulate the senses in the morning.’
This design trick makes sense – after all, the ceiling is, more often than not, the first thing we lay eyes on after stirring from sleep. ‘Most of us spend the majority of our time in the bedroom looking at the walls. We’re mostly only aware of our ceiling colours when lying in bed, looking up. So it’s useful for a stimulating morning wake-up while not disturbing sleep,’ says Sammy Margo, sleep expert at Dreams.
Which colours should I pick?
The key to nailing this trick and mastering the art of the early morning wake-up lies in choosing the right shade for your ceiling.
‘The colour you pick should be energising but not so bold they become visually overwhelming when you’re lying in bed,’ says Sammy. And, it should also complement your existing bedroom colour scheme for an effortless finish. Unsure where to start? We asked the experts which colours work best.
Pink
‘To boost energy levels in the morning, opt for soft but uplifting shades that emulate early morning light,’ suggests Marianne. ‘Pale corals or a warm blush can gently stimulate wakefulness without being overpowering.
This pink ceiling is in a hallway, but the same look can work in a bedroom
‘These colours bring a sense of warmth and optimism that eases you into the day with positivity and brightness,’ she adds. Try shades like Blush Pink from Dulux to get the look.
Green
According to colour psychology, green is a calming colour that also possesses rejuvenating properties, making it the perfect shade for your ceiling.
What’s more – it works perfectly as a playful pop in a kids room, or can be included in a more luxe adult scheme. Either way, it’s a great shade to help you start the day.
Yellow
‘Brighter yellow, associated with sunlight, would be my favourite choice for stimulation, followed by tangerine orange,’ says Dave. These warm hues can mimic the feel of a sunrise and help us spring into action each morning.
However, no matter which colour you pick, it’s important to consider the logistics of your room before committing. ‘Factors such as the amount of natural light and room size can also affect how colours appear and influence energy levels and mood,’ he adds.
