Striking Black, Grey And Wood Interior In Estonia

Earthy grey stone elements, black marble, and deep natural wood tone combine to present this sophisticated home interior with a dash of panache. Visualised by Iryna Borysenko, this striking 800 square metre private house in Tallinn, Estonia, is a unique space with fresh, modern styling and strong character. A double-height living room makes a striking statement at the heart of the home with a fabulous stone fireplace, a towering bookcase design, and a wraparound glass mezzanine. A contemporary staircase design climbs to the top floor on illuminated treads to access an impressive master bedroom suite with its own lounge area and home workspace, as well as a gorgeous, luxury bathroom.

As we enter the impressive double-height living room, it’s the ceiling-mounted fireplace that makes the first impression. The enormous fluted chimney is suspended above a unique stone hearth where open flames leap at one end.

A modern sectional sofa and matching ottomans wrap the remaining three sides of the large lounge in a U-shaped arrangement. A light grey living room rug holds the entire arrangement together on soft ground.

Wall art adds a touch of colour to the laconic decor palette of grey, black, white and wood tone. A black floor lamp leans a slender arc over the furniture arrangement.

A glass mezzanine landing wraps the top of the double-height living room, achieving open connection between both levels of the home. An attention grabbing modern staircase design climbs between the floors on illuminated wood and marble base treads and suspended concrete uppers.

A spectacular, towering bookcase design calls further attention to the vertical plane of the double height living room. The bookcase stacks volumes from the floor of the lounge to the ceiling of the mezzanine. A mature bonsai tree stands in front, lit warmly in the glow of LED uplights.

Two modern lounge chairs and a matching footstool gather at the opposite side of the fireplace in a cosy conversational arrangement. Their close proximity to the bookcase also makes this a welcoming reading nook by the fireside.

An enormous slatted room divider climbs to the lofty heights of the living room too, where it subtly screens the staircase without obstructing natural light flow. Uplights moodily illuminate the vertical fins.

The base of the slatted structure is utilised as a low bench seat. Soft seat pads provide a comfortable landing spot. Books and a decorative bowl adorn the end of the low slug seating area.

The formal dining area accommodates up to ten guests at a large wooden dining table. A trio of spectacular dining room pendant lights make a sculptural impact above the modern dining set. Green views lay out a stunning dual aspect panorama.

Modern track lights thread even illumination through the neighbouring kitchen area, where an impactful kitchen island divides the layout.

A bank of appliance housing units, open shelving towers, and wine storage racks build a wall of warm wood tone. Glossy black integrated appliances make dark contrast.

Illuminated upper cabinets set a golden glimmer against a cool, luxurious grey stone backsplash wall that climbs all the up to the ceiling line. Black base units strike a dark underline.

Wooden kitchen bar stools contrast beautifully with the monolithic grey stone kitchen island.

Upstairs in the master bedroom, a grey upholstered bed is wrapped by a custom-built, winged headboard design.

A pair of bedroom chairs and a small glass side table have been arranged by the windows as a place to enjoy morning coffee together, or to read a book in solitude. Vertical linear wall lights brightly illuminate this relaxation area at night.

A modern grey bedroom rug lays a soft base around the bed.

Behind the winged headboard design, a small home workspace tucks into a cosy nook. Unique wall shelves decorate the space above it with practical storage. The entryway into the ensuite bathroom is framed by black, sliding muxarabi screens.

The ensuite bathroom is a luxurious space with a huge floor-to-ceiling picture window. A treetop view grants the room with a sense of peace and tranquillity. A unique bathtub is set in front of the serene view, as the ideal spot in which to let troubles float away.

A modern towel rail is set up at the foot of the bathtub, with hooks for a toiletries tray and a small mirror. Black marble flooring with a striking white vein pulls the monochrome bathroom scheme together.

Repositionable track lights thread through the centre of the bathroom, leading the way from the tub to the shower area.

Opposite the bathtub, a fluted marble feature wall draws attention to the modern bathroom vanity area. Open shelving units provide an abundance of bathroom storage for clean towels and toiletry supplies.

Marble cladding is applied behind a wall hung toilet and matching bidet too.

In the shower area, the fluted marble wall treatment returns to create an attractive wet wall. LED strips lights highlight the deeply grooved texture. Heated towel bars are installed just outside of the walk-in shower area to keep fresh towels at hand.

Black shower fixtures meld into the dark stone.

A frameless vanity mirror makes a sharp yet understated addition to the vanity area.

A recessed shelving tower separates the wall mounted toilet and bidet with a column of contrast.

Elegant DIY Wood and Glass Trough Vase

As a borderline obsessive flower lover, I’m always on the hunt for new vases and centerpiece ideas. So when I ran across a beautiful rectangular glass container on Amazon, I knew I had to have it (and make something out of it, of course). Click through to check out the resulting trough-style vase that I came up with.

It has space for four stems, and all four draw from the trough of water below. The wooden top is removable, and keeps the stems securely in place. And it’s really quite simple to make! So let’s get started.

Here’s what you’ll need for your trough vase:

Rectangular Centerpiece Vase
Two pieces of wood, size 10×4″ and 9.5 x 3.5″
Wood glue
Acrylic craft paint
Painter’s tape
Drill with 1/2″ drill bit (or similar)
Foam brush
Pencil
Ruler
Sandpaper

Before you begin, make sure that the larger piece of wood has the exact same measurements as the outside of the glass centerpiece vase and that the smaller piece fits snugly in the interior of the top of the glass vase. If not, sand it down so that it fits nicely. Apply a healthy dose of glue to the larger piece of wood, leaving about a 1/2 inch glue-less around the edges.

Place the smaller piece of wood on top of the larger one, pressing down firmly. Make sure it is centered. Let it dry for a minute or two until it is quite tacky but not completely adhered.

Place it on top of the glass centerpiece vase to make sure that the wood pieces are aligned so that they fit perfectly into the top of the glass vase. Remove it and let it dry for a couple of hours.

Next, find the horizontal center line of the wood and place four dots along that line as shown above. They should be evenly spaced, with two inches between each dot. Drill a hole down through each mark. Don’t forget to place a piece of scrap wood underneath. Sand any rough edges.

Mask off a 3/4 inch perimeter around the top using painter’s tape. Press firmly around the edges so that they form a strong bond to the wood.

Paint inside this taped-off rectangle with acrylic craft paint in the color of your choice.

Remove the tape, let the paint dry, and you’re finished! Fill the glass vase with water and insert four stems for a unique centerpiece for your dinner table, kitchen island or accent table.

This is sure to be a conversation starter, thanks to its unusual design and contemporary vibe. You can change the look of it by trying different types of flowers… calla lilies would lend a modern feel, while daisies would give it a more rustic sensibility.

You might also consider a different color or even a different finish for the top part – a dark stain would be beautiful, or a metallic rose gold would look super glam.

While this project looks like it would be difficult to complete, it’s actually surprisingly simple and quick to finish. You should be able to do it in an hour or two (not including drying time), depending on how quickly you work. Feel free to post questions or links to your own versions in the comments section below!
