While I’ve never been a smoker, I have a bit of a passion for collecting vintage — wait for it — ashtrays. Weird? Well, not really, when you think about how pretty some of these pieces are and how many ways they can be used around the house. As someone who loves to decorate, I am always excited to think outside the box a bit when it comes to styling vignettes around my apartment. Over the past few years, I’ve found that vintage crystal ashtrays never fail to shine on my coffee table, desk, or nightstand.

I mainly use ashtrays to hold another favorite household item of mine: candles. I’ll often post pictures of my setups on Instagram, and whenever I do, I always receive excited comments from followers wanting to know how to replicate the look. Luckily for them, it’s super easy and affordable. Vintage ashtrays come in plenty of different styles, sizes, and shapes. If you frequently visit flea markets and thrift stores, you’re more than likely to score an ashtray or two there, but eBay and Etsy make great resources as well. I’ve even found some cool ashtrays on the home section of Poshmark.

Even better, I find that most of the crystal ashtrays I’m drawn to retail for less than $20 — but they’re still a decent size and made from high-quality material. They also make for beautiful jewelry storage when I’m not using them to hold candles. I can’t stand the thought of placing my special bracelets or rings on the nightstand and having them roll onto the floor or behind my bed and get scratched — or worse — lost. In comes the vintage ashtray, which is not only functional but also looks extra fancy.

Ashtrays can also double as cute coasters. I sometimes place my seltzer can in one while I’m working from the couch, and it makes my work-from-home setup feel a little more elegant. Come to think of it, you could even use a vintage crystal ashtray as a coaster holder, if you have flatter wood rounds or paper styles to store.

I’m all about the small touches that really make a house a home, and for me, I find that vintage ashtrays do just that in my space. If crystal doesn’t speak to you, you can collect ceramic, metal, or enamel versions, too, and use them pretty much the same way. It’s all up to you and the look of your place, and they’re easy enough to clean and give new life to wherever you decide to put them.

If you’ve been a fan of designer Sarah Sherman Samuel from the start of her fairly meteoric rise in the interiors world, then you likely remember her two-tone Venice kitchen, which featured Semihandmade‘s DIY Shaker fronts. Fast-forward four years, and she launched her own beadboard door and drawer front collab with the brand in 2017, which she followed up with the addition of Quarterline, a modern take on the traditional shaker cabinet named for the smaller size of its stile and available in six colorways. Since launching in 2019, Quarterline’s been a best-seller, so it’s only fitting that Semihandmade and Sherman Samuel are coming together again to launch DIY Quarterline, an unfinished, paintable drawer and door front series with a truly unlimited amount of styling possibilities.

If you’re unfamiliar with Semihandmade, the brand is best known for selling DIY doors and drawer fronts for customizing IKEA cabinetry. The primary use case for DIY Quarterline might be in a kitchen, but like other Semihandmade prodcut, this new line of fronts can also be applied to cabinets in bathrooms (IKEA’s GODMORGON series), mudrooms, and closets. My favorite ever application might actually be for media consoles (IKEA’s BESTA series). It can be hard to find nicer budget options when it comes to these types of pieces, so a new set of doors — and the option to paint them in any hue, with or without texture — can go a long way in making your living or bedroom feel more like you. You could also try giving a dining room sideboard or entryway cabinet a Sarah Sherman Samuels-inspired makeover, too.

If you’re looking for color inspiration for your cook space or otherwise, Sherman Samuel says she’s feeling shades like terracotta, ochre, and varying shades of green, all of which are now a possibility with the DIY line.“Having this DIY option not only makes my collection more customizable but also more affordable,” Sherman Samuels says of the new offering, which she plans on using in her SSS Showhouse project (pictured above). “Additionally, I love a good monochrome look in a room, and with these DIY doors, you can paint the cabinet fronts to match your wall color, countertop material, tile, etc. — it can really create an unexpected, modern look to a room that I personally am very into.”

The Semihandmade x Sarah Sherman Samuel DIY Quarterline fronts are available to order right now and can be used to upgrade a variety of IKEA cabinet solutions.  This collection comes on the heels of Sherman Samuel’s own launch of SSS Atelier last month, where the designer’s original art and tapestries are now available for purchase.

7 Easy Ways to Give Your Tiny Bedroom a Fresh Look

7 Easy Ways to Give Your Tiny Bedroom a Fresh Look

February is Bedroom Month on Apartment Therapy! We’re sharing stories all month about bedrooms — from how to decorate them, to the fascinating history of them, and so much more. Head over here to see them all!

After spending so much time at home over the past few years, your bedroom might start to be feeling a little, well, stale. It’s easy to feel like you’ve been staring at the same four walls and sleeping on the same old sheets forever. Sound familiar? Then this year might be the perfect time to finally give your sleeping quarters a refresh.

Of course, if you’re short on square footage, switching up the look of your room is a lot easier said than done — but with a few easy tweaks, you can upgrade your tiny bedroom. The benefits extend far beyond just visual appeal: If you love the room you fall asleep and wake up in, your mood and wellness can improve, too.

Ready to give your little bedroom a face-lift? These design experts share seven tips on how to freshen up even the tiniest of bedrooms.

Go ceiling-high with your curtains.

While your room might not have the loftiest of ceilings, you can still trick the eye into thinking it does. “Move the drapery rod as close to the ceiling as you can, and buy drape panels that come down to the floor,” says designer Noz Nozawa, principal interior designer at Noz Design. “You can’t change a tiny room’s dimensions, but at least you can enhance the illusion of ceiling height.”

Curtains can also frame furniture, create symmetry, and add softness to your small bedroom. Plus, tons of options exist — whether you’re looking for a romantic vibe with some sheer drapes or a dramatic pop of color with a vibrant velvet.

Don’t skimp on the houseplants.

Awkward corner? Empty nightstand? Bland decor? There’s nothing a good houseplant can’t fix! By bringing a little bit of the outdoors in, plants instantly make any space feel more fresh and lively. Designer and home therapist Anita Yokota suggests looking to the ground — and the air — for the best placement. “Floor plants can add height and draw the eye upward, making the space feel a bit bigger,” she explains. “For tighter spaces, choose a fun hanging planter to display over your nightstand.”

Organize (or hide) your cables.

Tangled wires are a nuisance to deal with — and not particularly pretty to look at. “In our modern lives, cable management can often mean the difference between a space looking chaotic or serene,” Nozawa says.

Do yourself a favor and keep all those chargers and plug-ins tidy. “Treating yourself to a pretty magnetic charging tray or a charger-and-cable box beside your bed keeps your electronics close by but visually restful,” Nozawa says.

Opt for an oversized mirror.

It may be the oldest trick in the book, but an oversized mirror really does work wonders to make a room feel bigger and brighter. Especially in a teensy bedroom, where your bed probably takes up most of the floor space, mirrors can create visual balance without the need for more furniture.

Mirrors come in so many unique shapes and frame styles, too. “Whether you’re thrifting to find a cool vintage mirror or taking on a fun mirror DIY, adding in this decorative element will help reflect natural light into the space, giving it a whole new feel,” Yokota says.

Short on wall space? “Adding a full-length mirror behind a bedside table can do the trick,” Nozawa suggests.

Pamper yourself with luxurious bedding.

Yes, nice bedding can be pricey. For something as valuable and important as quality sleep, though, the splurge is worth it. Just imagine wrapping yourself in soft, plush, cloud-like bedding each night — seriously, there are few better feelings.

Go ahead and make the jump to something hotel-quality. “Invest in the most luxurious bedding you’ve been eyeing,” Nozawa says. “Even if your tiny bedroom circumstances are temporary, you’ll get to enjoy your super-luxe amazing sheets and duvet every single day until it’s time to upsize.”

Double down on double-duty furniture.

One of the biggest challenges in designing a small bedroom is balancing style with space-saving solutions. While multifunctional pieces sometimes get a bad rap for being uncomfortable or unattractive, they’re key for a small space. If you get creative, plenty of these types of pieces can look really stylish, too.

“For example, a bench at the end of the bed acts as decor, seating, and extra storage,” Yokota says. By day, you can set down books or trays of jewelry there, and by night, store away your extra pillows and bedding in this spot.

While you might not typically think of decluttering as a way to add style, organizing your odds and ends actually creates soothing negative space. Plus, as Nozawa notes, it’s “so healthy to unburden yourself of things that don’t serve you.”

If you still have stuff without a home, Yokota recommends using under-the-bed storage. “[This] helps minimize clutter so you can display the items you really want to showcase,” she says. Tried-and-true floating shelves or even a slim-line credenza can help you store away any bits and pieces, too.

5 Decorative Items You’re Forgetting to Shop for on Etsy

5 Decorative Items You’re Forgetting to Shop for on Etsy

You likely already know that Etsy is an excellent resource for scoring art prints, pillow covers, and candles, but the website’s home gems don’t end there. Below are five of my favorite types of off-the-beaten-path accent pieces to pick up via Etsy sellers, all of which will add major personality to your space, no matter your design style.

This may be a fairly specific category, but hear me out: There’s nothing more fun than stumbling upon a vintage accent piece from a favorite hotel and incorporating it into your home decor. Whether the hotel is one of your go-tos or purely aspirational, Etsy has you covered. For example, I’m somewhat obsessed with the idea of the Beverly Hills Hotel in L.A. (I’ll stay there one day, I swear!) and love searching for trinkets from this spot on Etsy: ashtrays, key fobs, and even just postcards are fair game. These types of pieces add so much personality to a space. If you vacationed at a certain hotel for a special anniversary or birthday trip and are looking to honor that memory, even better — particularly if you forgot to pick something up during your initial stay.

I posted a photo of this brass bowl on my Instagram recently and received so many questions about it. This Etsy find is excellent for styling, whether you use one of these as an accent piece or fill it with the trinket of your choice, you can’t go wrong. Just search for “brass scalloped bowl,” and many similar options will pop up. They’re great for topping a stack of books or just setting on a console or table. You can also use one to hold fruit, matchbooks, and a number of other smaller items.

Can you tell I have a penchant for decorating with pieces that have a bit of history? In addition to browsing for hotel memorabilia, I love shopping for anything that pertains to my alma mater, Colby College in Maine. When I came across this Etsy shop about a year ago, I was overwhelmed (in the best way possible) by all of the amazing framed vintage university postcards the seller had listed from schools across the country. If you have a favorite campus building or just want to honor your time at law school, check out this shop. The pieces are well priced and make for excellent gifts, too. I’ve given a few to family members who have loved them.

Sometimes, I just can’t resist a quirky vintage portrait to hang in my apartment. I’ve amassed quite a few over the years, and Etsy is always my go-to resource for these types of pieces. The above portrait that I picked up this fall just has so much personality (the worker at the frame shop I used referred to her as “the queen”) and makes a bold statement on my gallery wall. You’ll be able to find a whole range of styles, colors, and sizes via Etsy, and while it may take a while to browse through all of the listings, you’re bound to find a piece or two that speaks to you. Etsy has a lot of vintage portrait art prints available, too, which can be a more budget-friendly way of getting this look at home.

Sometime last summer, I became super into the idea of busting out a vintage ice bucket every time my friends came over for wine night. It doesn’t hurt that there are so many gorgeous crystal pieces on the market and that ice buckets can also serve double duty as chic vases. Whether you prefer a scalloped design or drool over etched florals, you can’t go wrong. Some of the buckets come with a corresponding set of drinking glasses. You can even turn one into a planter, as shown here.

It really goes without saying — because maybe you’ve noticed?— but Apartment Therapy’s a company full of candle lovers and homebodies. There’s something super-soothing about lighting a candle, any time of day really, and just letting the scent fill your room. All candles are not created equal though, so it’s always special when you find a new company to shop from with amazing new scents to obsess over. Right now, I cannot get over Tribe & Oak‘s offerings, and I think everyone should have one (or all!) of their dreamy candles at home.

Tribe & Oak is a newer company, founded in 2021 by Taylor Tankson and Kareem Wallace, a Black couple based in Brooklyn, New York. In an effort to connect after going into yet another year of the pandemic, Tankson and Wallace started trying a bunch of different activities at home, and the one they enjoyed the most was candle-making. “We started making more and more candles then shared them with our family and friends, who convinced us to turn it into a business,” Tankson says. They decided to go for it last year and haven’t looked back.

Tankson and Wallace researched different types of candle wax and learned certain types can be harmful to the environment, pets, and people with varying conditions. “We deal with sinuses, allergies, and other environmental sensitivities, so it was important to make products that are safe,” the couple says. Tankson specifically suffers from asthma, so using all-natural and cruelty-free materials was a must. “Making natural products that are vegan, eco-friendly, and cruelty-free was our number one priority,” says Wallace.

Of all of their products, the Coconut Sandalwood scent is easily Tankson’s favorite; once lit, you can expect it to give off a warm, potent coconut fragrance infused with spicier notes like cedarwood, orange, and patchouli. Wallace’s go-to scent is the Amber Cedarwood candle, which has a bold, more woodsy fragrance with some subtle, earthy notes like black pepper and pimento berry. However, Tribe & Oak’s best-seller is the Citrus Pine candle. “This one is liked by all genders, Wallace says. “It has an enchanting blend of fresh evergreen finishes with a sweet hint of exotic fruits.”

If you want to give Tribe & Oak a try, you can start with smaller, votives-sized samples for $15 each. That said, there’s not a bad scent in the bunch, so you can fully indulge by purchasing a full-sized, 11 oz. candle for $38 as well.

As their business continues to grow, Tankson and Wallace value their customers more than anything. “This past year has taught many of us that connecting with ourselves, and those closest to us in the places we call home, is the most important thing,” their site reads. “Our mission is to bring luxury and quality products to your home that do just that.”
