A fresh start begins for the proud homeowner of Claywood House in Hampshire, England, which is designed to smoothly incorporate wheelchair accessibility requirements. The sleek inclusion of wide hallways, low windows and flush thresholds that allow the client to move freely through her home and exterior spaces helped earn House of the Year 2022, British Homes Awards’ winner status. Created by the talented architectural team at Ayre Chamberlain Gaunt, this 5-bedroom house is also a cool contemporary, low-carbon home design with an airtight and insulated envelope. It includes a 12kw Photovoltaic array, a ground source heat pump, and a mechanical heat recovery ventilation system, all culminating in a highly sustainable new building.
Measuring 750 square metres, the modern house is located in an orchard that once belonged to the grounds of the client’s previous home. The original dwelling was a multi-level house that was unsuitable for conversion into a wheelchair accessible abode, and so was sold on.
The modern exterior is designed in contrast to the traditional architecture of the client’s former home, which represents the significant fresh start for her and her family.
The architecture was shaped in response to the sloping topography and natural boundary of the site, and to minimise impact upon the established landscape.
The composition of the house is structured to direct views away from the former home, looking out over the gardens instead. This arrangement creates a well-established entrance to the new property, as well as cosily sheltered living modules.
A colourful landscape design softens the sharp, linear nature of the contemporary architecture.
Smooth, gently sloping pathways ensure that a wheelchair user can make easy passage to and from the property.
A privately accessed guest annex projects to the south of the house.
When designing the exterior of the home, inspiration was drawn from the historic brickworks and clay pits that are located near the home. Pale, long-format bricks form a visually heavy base volume, which supports a contrasting timber-slatted upper.
The interior is an inclusive space that ensures continuous moments of connection for the whole family. The wooden dining table has space for a wheelchair user to pull up easily at the head of the table. The kitchen peninsula is low enough to see over from a seated position.
Floor-to-ceiling glazing and lower windows offer full and beautiful views out to the garden for both wheelchair-seated and standing family members. Wide walkways and hallways enable all members of the family to pass by one another with ease.
A sleek black kitchen design complements the black slatted timber cladding on the exterior of the home.
Modern artwork provides uplifting moments of colour throughout the home, which cheerfully contrast the crisp white, grey, and black backdrop.
The house includes a lift for full accessibility.
A simple, light timber staircase design rises past a black wood-slatted wall, creating fresh contrast.
A grand piano fills the open plan living space with music.
Sunlight cuts through gaps in the wood-slatted upper volume, creating wonderful light play in a corridor that leads to the bedrooms.
A geometric bedroom rug colours a large master bedroom, where bespoke wardrobes are built-in to flank each side of the bed. Huge floor-to-ceiling windows bathe the master bedroom in light and glorious green views.
An accessible bathroom design is fully encased with luxe travertine tiles.
Soft, atmospheric lighting lines the perimeter of the room.
The house also includes a physiotherapy pool, gym, and a carer’s suite.
Long slender windows and skylights dash sunbeams onto the water’s surface.
In the guest annex, another colourful rug brings cheerful vibes. The rug serves as a zoning device to establish a lounge area, where two comfortable grey armchairs rest. A rustic bed dominates the far end of the annex with a striking arched silhouette.
The opposite end of the annex is dedicated to a small dining area with a table for two. A unique bookcase modernly decorates the focal wall.
An accessible shower room is fully-fitted with chrome handrails.
A smaller bathroom follows a conventional design. Grey granite tiles complete a simple, minimalist aesthetic across the walls, floor, and bathtub.
In the games room, bespoke cabinetry and bookshelves line the walls in an L-shape to embrace a snooker table at the centre.
Facilities for specialist care are all conveniently included on-site.
Deep reveals and chamfered cutaways are designed to articulate the depth and solidity of the ground floor brick volume.
The base volume of the home contains the main living spaces, parking garage, and the therapeutic indoor swimming pool area.
A massive window brings a garden panorama to the guest annex in the cantilevered upper volume.
Reveal windows on the east and west facades, with timber slats marching between, are designed to replicate the rhythmic pattern of the surrounding trees.
Smooth transitions across flush thresholds allow the boundary between indoor and outdoor spaces to be blissfully blurred, ensuring easy wheelchair access to the garden.
Outdoor lights spotlight the house, s sweeping driveway, and the landscaped gardens at night.
A large garage and ample storage areas keep wheelchairs tucked away but easily accessible.
The modern home rests gently in the natural environment.
The tree-lined location affords privacy to the homeowners despite the inclusion of large and low windows.
Attractive borders create a picturesque pathway around the home.

A free-flowing layout creates a connected sense of family in this 112 square metre apartment project in the south of Moscow, Russia. Designed by Julia Khabarova, for a young couple with a child, the home was created to include an autonomous master block that avoids the inclusion of dead ends around the main living spaces. A central “cube” forces new scenarios of movement around the apartment in answer to an immovable riser. The material palette of slatted oak veneer, suede upholstery, cool concrete and reflective metals create an earthy aesthetic, alongside tonal shades of grey and warm umber accents. The full floor plan is included at the end of the tour.
Gray living room decor is warmed through with wood clad feature walls formed with layers of slatted texture. The lounge area is lined with heavy drapes that create a soft backdrop for an L-shaped sectional sofa arrangement.
The clients requested the inclusion of a bio fireplace in the living room. The flames ficker openly across a hearth that protrudes toward the adjacent kitchen diner area.
A table for four is adjoined to a central kitchen island. The table can also be extended to accommodate extra dinner guests, serving up to a party of six.
The open plan living space also includes the hallway area. Here, a generous storage system lines the walls, flowing toward the laundry room. Wood panels and slats of different widths form floor-to-ceiling handles on the hallway cabinets. This aesthetic is repeated to create interest across the TV wall in the lounge too, which creates a cohesive look through the open concept.
The modern fireplace is reflected in full length mirrors that are embedded into the opposite wall of the walkway.
A floating bookcase is fashioned into the back of the wall mounted TV cabinet.
The homeowners chose to make the kitchen island countertop deeper, at 750 millimeters, to allow them to comfortably cook and prep on both sides of the worktop.
Oak veneer column units house integrated appliances.
At the end of the kitchen island, a floating sink section allows direct access from three sides. Two-sided pull-out sections offer practical sized drawers that are not too heavy or too deep.
The decor scheme uses an earthy material palette of oak veneer, suede, concrete and metal, alongside shades of grey and warm umber.
A central “cube” was fashioned to accommodate a riser in the apartment. Decorative blue-gray plaster and a recessed lighting strip makes a feature of the volume, which contains the guest bathroom.
The central cube creates diversity in the space, and causes different scenarios of movement.
The laundry room is revealed from behind a sliding door that can be left open without causing obstruction. When drawn back, an umber feature wall adds colour to the hallway.
The door to the guest bathroom is concealed with the dark plasterwork of the “cube”.
The private master bedroom suite sees a repeat of the layered, slatted wall panel treatment. The umber accent returns in the shape of a modern upholstered bed.
A swing arm wall lamp produces focussed reading light over the pillows. A stylish bedroom chair offers another comfortable reading spot in the corner of the room.
Blue artwork brightens the bedroom palette.
A grey bedroom rug brings a cosy factor to the oak laminate flooring.
Grey bedroom curtains copy the plush drapes in the living room.
A glass vase filled with stems adds a splash of greenery by the bed.
Mini bedroom pendant lights are paired at varying height over the bedside table, which compliments its tiered silhouette.
A recessed LED strip cuts down the bedroom focal wall, drawing attention to the artwork and a clean white linear console unit.
The ensuite bathroom is accessed via the dressing area, where smooth oak veneer wardrobes line the walls.
Black fixtures punctuate the guest bathroom, where blue-gray plaster contrasts with a white wet zone and floor tiles. The recessed floor-to-ceiling mirrors are the same inclusions that reflect the modern fireplace out in the living area. The mirrors help build an open, airy and lighter feel inside the compact area.
Built-in shelves thread an element of textural wood grain through the toilet cistern concealment wall.
A slatted room divider marks the entryway into the shower area.
The pedestal sink is positioned up against the slatted shower wall, where its black faucet becomes lost against the dark plaster backdrop. A slimline shelf cuts through the sink unit, extending to the side to hold toiletries and a decorative vase. A perspex stool injects a translucent umber accent into the shower enclosure.
Atmospheric light extends the warming umber accent colour through the entire shower area at night, creating a restful ambiance for unwinding at the end of a long and tiring day.
The floor plan illustrates the flow of family life around the apartment, and the peaceful divide between the private master suite and the kid’s bedroom on the other side of the layout. The laundry room provides an extra sound buffer from the youngest member of the household.

When thinking up a cohesive colour scheme, it’s easy to go down a path of neutrals or a safe tonal spectrum. However, a boldly creative colour combination will fashion a much stronger connection through a modern interior, just like the two intriguing home designs we feature here today. Each measuring under 85 sqm (900 sqft), these home interiors come alive under rich green and blue accents. Our first tour is an industrial style space, where a hint of tan and muted copper join the palette to complement ruddy exposed brickwork. The colour palette explodes with pink and bright yellow additions in our other featured abode, where art deco inspired elements help shape a daring family home.
This 82.5 square metre home design features an industrial style interior with exposed brickwork walls. Traditional wainscotting has been added around the lower portion of the walls to style a smooth, sophisticated finish that will take a pristine coat of deep green paint. Square coffee tables tie in with the square panel moulding.
A modern TV stand colours a matt copper accent across the living room TV wall, which is backed with fashionable wood slatted boards and finished with panel moulding up to the ceiling line.
A modern tufted sofa continues the square motif in its upholstery. An ottoman places a sapphire blue accent at the centre of the grey arrangement.
One chic lounge chair adds another deep blue accent to balance out the ottoman. A swing arm wall lamp sheds reading light across the couch.
A textured area rug dapples a tonal blue design beneath the black coffee tables, which has an uplifting effect.
Out in the home entryway, a round mirror and a vanity unit are set neatly into an alcove, with two small pendant lights to chase away the shadows.
The open plan lounge blends into the dining area and onto the kitchen. A large modern dining room chandelier darkly matches with jet black kitchen cabinets.
A KAWS statue is poised by a glass wall, which leads to an ensuite bathroom and a walk-in wardrobe.
A home workspace is set up by the window.
Grey drapes frame the grey painted window frame. The modern wood desk and tan desk chair place warm accents at the centre of the sill.
Quirky artwork paints a tongue-in-cheek sense of grandeur.
Floor plan.
Measuring 83.2 square metres, this daring home design belongs to a small family. In the living room, we’re introduced into a boldly split red and green interior scheme, where an unusual sofa design changes colour halfway.
The decor palette quickly incorporates a burst of bright yellow in a set of nesting coffee tables by the couch, and along the edge of a dividing wall that supports the TV. An art deco-inspired metalwork screen opens up the top of the dividing wall to accept light from the adjacent kitchen diner.
Contrasting pink and green kitchen cabinets join the bold colour party.
The L-shaped kitchen wraps its colourfully cubist arrangement around the compact dining area. A few white cabinets are interspersed within the wall of colour, along with a white countertop and backsplash to break the saturation.
Inside the pink bedroom, a blue bed lays down a wonderfully contrasting element.
A white bedside table stands at one side of the bed, whilst a blue counterpart serves the other.
A blue light fixture balances out the boldness of the bed.
Painted components and decorative framework form an abstract feature wall around the bedroom TV.
Two more empty frames are hung above each bedside to create height and layering.
Creative use of tile and colour shapes an extraordinary bathroom scheme. Despite the small proportions of the room, the look is dramatic and memorable.
A punchy yellow vanity unit makes bright contrast with deep blue floor tiles. A long bathroom vanity light complements the unique mirror design. See more bathroom vanity lights here.
The unusual blue floor tiles continue up and around the bathtub to thrilling effect.
In the kid’s room, blush, blue, green and yellow accents colour a fun play space.
A fabulous wallcovering brings the whole room palette together behind a pretty blush daybed and an all-seeing modern wall sconce that looks like a giant eye.
The opposite wall is dedicated to the kid’s study. A tower of colourful storage adds a unique touch.
An indoor climbing frame builds more space to play in a small bedroom floor plan.
Cute kids’ decor fills the window sill, next to a cheerful yellow window frame and a matching radiator.
3D tiles carve an interesting wet zone in the shower room.
Geometric tiles fashion a black and white sketched effect around the vanity area and across the floor.
Another art deco-inspired screen decorates the hallway with stained glass.
Solid blue decor defines the entryway.
Door hardware and recessed shelves pop in vivid yellow.

With the furniture moved in toward the centre of the room, the lounge layout realises an easy circulation of space in which the fireplace is brought right up close and cosy to the end of the modern sofa, leaving the focal wall in front purely for the heat-sensitive TV set.
A pale grey rug creates a core for the beige furniture arrangement.
Black nesting coffee tables darkly complement the modern fireplace aesthetic and its matching fireplace accessories. A coffee table book and a black Eames bird make simple but effective adornments.
A black linear TV stand underlines a textural wall of ribbed gypsum, which has been given a light grey painted finish.

Plush grey curtains not only dress the window but soften the divide between the lounge and dining spaces.

Modern plant stands accessorise the space beneath the modern staircase design. Glass balustrades maintain the open feel of the ground floor and allow the glow of the stair lights to brightly shine through.
A cut log store has been built into the fireplace wall in the lounge. The useful feature doubles as a focal point at the end of the hallway.
