Apartment Christmas Decorations that Are Festive and Affordable

If you’re renting, you probably aren’t ready to invest in expensive holiday decor (yet). Maybe it’s not your vibe or you’re on a budget.

Whatever the reason, decor for small spaces allows you to decorate without worrying about breaking the bank. No, this doesn’t mean your place will be riddled with tacky plastic ornaments that say “Live, Laugh, Love,” but it does mean your hard-earned money can go towards smaller (and thus more affordable) apartment Christmas decorations.

Here are a few ideas for affordable and simple Christmas decorations that you can feel good about.

Turn your bar cart into a holiday spirit command station

More and more bar carts are being used as a platform for holiday decor. And why not? They’re affordable, stylish, and they hold alcohol – talk about the holiday spirit(s)! Hone in on a color scheme or theme, and use objects of varying heights to style the top of your bar cart.

Try candles, bottles of spiced booze, and small knick-knacks. Drape a garland or a festive banner over the railing, and style some mule mugs underneath.

Let your walls do the work

The easiest way to get the most bang for your buck with simple Christmas decorations is by using walls to your advantage.

And don’t worry, there are several hacks for hanging without creating a ton of holes (like Command hooks and strips, thumb tacks and a few more that we’ll suggest later, so yep, keep reading).

The best perk about vertical decor is it makes a small room appear taller – so look up to walls, windows, arches and door frames for inspiration.

Deck the walls, not the halls

Speaking of walls and windows…

Maybe you have space for a tree, but those faux gift boxes won’t work, or you have tabletop space for just a centerpiece but now the charging plates and holiday printed dishware look cluttered.

If you want to pack in more holiday cheer without risking square footage, focus your decor on windows and walls. Hang a wreath in an open window, or make your own window decals. Hang felt banners on the wall, try your hand at a DIY Advent calendar, or use tape to create festive, temporary imagery.

Swap smaller everyday objects with festive ones

If you already have a decor theme, give it a festive twist by swapping out a few pieces. For instance, pillows with replaceable covers can be changed to match a holiday theme.

Throw blankets, napkins, placements and hand towels are also easily replaced without needing a lot of storage.

Make magic with existing furniture

If your apartment doesn’t include traditional railing or supportive structures like a mantel or a bannister, that’s ok! There are other ways to spread holiday cheer throughout your home, and all you need is your existing furniture.

Yes – your dining table, breakfast table, and even your coffee table are great spots to place decor (like these DIY minimal cone trees, or a small tabletop tree).

Bookshelves, ledges, and media cabinets are great for hanging garlands and greenery from. And if you’re really short on space, you could always start hanging decorations from the ceiling.

Group smaller items for big impact

Grouping decor pieces is a great way to make items feels more intentional, stylish and save on space. Consider tricks like adding a collection of vintage ceramics, a candle centerpiece, or even a bowl full of pinecones as a beautiful tabletop display or coffee table vignette to tie everything together.

Spend big on a dollar store budget

A dollar goes farther when you’re shopping at the dollar store, and just because it cost less doesn’t mean it won’t stand the test of time.

Whether it’s the dollar bin of your local Target or thrift store, or your favorite Dollar Store chain, there’s lots of affordable options. Since ornaments can add up quickly, we recommend starting here first.

How to Decorate (And Keep Your Security Deposit)

Living in a rental means there most likely was a security deposit paid at move-in. And of course, you want to get that money back when it’s time to move out.

You can still deck your place out with holiday flair by hanging decorations that won’t cause permanent damage. Let’s meet some of the other players in the nail-free game:

How to hang a stocking in a rental

For those lucky enough to have a mantel over a fireplace in your apartment, you can avoid adding nail holes by adding a sturdy stocking holder (like this one) to the top of your mantel.

You can also hang stockings with a dressmaker pin by lightly hammering them in place – they are heavy enough to hold lightweight stockings and light enough to avoid a giant hole in your wall.

But if you don’t have a place for santa to receive a glass of milk and warm cookies, there are still a few options to consider. Try hanging your stocking from an existing peg rack. Or off a ladder. Or from a dressing rack. If it’s got a hook, you can hang it. Head over to our article on 16 mantel-free stocking ideas for inspiration!

The magic of tape

Never underestimate the magic of this simple tool: tape! If you’re a stationery lover, chances are you already have washi tape tucked away in a drawer.

It’s easy to use and comes in playful patterns and colors you can mix and match to add personality to your holiday décor.

Washi tape can be used to hang holiday cards, make unique festive graphics, or frame and highlight existing apartment Christmas decorations.

The paper clip trick

Hanging decor doesn’t get easier than using a paper clip. All you need is a small magnet and a piece of masking tape – seriously, it’s that easy.  Click here for the visual instructions.

What kind of Christmas tree should I get for my apartment?

Should you opt for the fresh pine scent of a real tree or opt for a fake one? Well, it could be dependent on the conditions of your lease. While some places don’t mind, others might have restrictions, so make sure to either ask your manager or review your leasing contract.

Space is one of the biggest considerations here. A faux tree is great to reuse year after year, but it could be a pain if you’re limited on space.

As you’re deciding, there are some smaller alternatives which could give you the best of both worlds: a super cute Christmas tree and space. There are a few solutions to consider, like mini tabletop tress (here’s a Charlie Brown version!), tree-alternatives, and half and quarter trees.

How to decorate an apartment door for Christmas

The easiest way to add holiday whimsy to your apartment is to start at the entrance. Decorating your apartment door is not only renter friendly, it spreads holiday cheer and your decor is safe from outdoor elements.

You can decorate an apartment door for Christmas in so many ways! Dress it up like a big present. Use temporary contact chalkboard and draw a festive scene or saying (like this festive door here). Buy or make your own holiday-inspired doormat.

Or go traditional with a handmade wreath (using a Command hook to hang, of course!).

One Final Tip: Keep It Cozy

One of the best things about a small space is its cozy charm! Add warm touches like glowing candles and oil warmers with holiday scents such as vanilla, cinnamon, and citrus.

Layer in texture with soft furs and flannels, and sprinkle natural elements like branches, pinecones, and cranberries throughout your home for an affordable, festive feel. You don’t need to buy all-new decor to make your feel space merry.

Simply focus on creating a warm, inviting space you’ll enjoy all season long.

15 Essential Furniture & Décor Hacks for Small Apartments

15 Essential Furniture & Décor Hacks for Small Apartments

Stumped about where to begin decorating your small apartment? Having a cozy space doesn’t mean there isn’t room for big ideas. Try our 15 essential hacks to transform your apartment.

15 decorating tips for small apartments

Interior of a small apartment

1. Swap out your large dining table

A large table can act as a statement piece for a dining area. However, unless you plan on hosting guests regularly, it can also occupy a significant amount of space. Instead, choose a smaller table with the same aesthetic impact.

Round tables are the best option for smaller spaces. Lacking sharp edges, these tables are easy to navigate and add a more open feel to the space.

If you’re really keen on saving space, you can also swap a static table for a foldable alternative. Some folding tables can be molded into various shapes and sizes – perfect for all occasions.

2. Choose multifunctional furniture

Some say that having a smaller space means choosing fewer forms of furniture. With some clever design choices, though, this doesn’t need to be the case. Multifunctional furniture can help you optimize your space while offering the flexibility you need.

For example, instead of a standard coffee table, choose an option with a lift top. As well as a resting place for your drinks and knick-knacks, this offers valuable storage space to keep your space clutter-free.

Some forms of multifunctional furniture even go a step further, offering smart features such as built-in charging ports. Consider your space and the functions most important to you, then see which furniture will be best-suited for you.

3. Declutter your kitchen

Kitchens are often home to large, bulky items. While essential, these items can make small spaces feel cramped. Luckily, a simple declutter can give your kitchen a new sense of spaciousness.

Better still, there are plenty of space-saving furniture hacks to get you started. Try the following tips.

  • Add over-the-door storage – Hang racks on your doors to store tins, spices, and other kitchen essentials.
  • Manage chords – Cable organizers can keep chords out of the way.
  • Add floating shelves to vacant walls – These offer a less bulky form of storage, helping you move clutter away from counters.

4. Rethink your windows

Windows don’t only provide natural light. Think a little outside the box, and they can become the focal point of a room.

For example, with some DIY, you can install a window seat. Add some paint and trim to blend with the aesthetic of a room, and some plump cushions for extra coziness. Lastly, install some low-profile bookshelves above for added character.

You now have the perfect reading nook!

5. Make use of empty spaces

Does your apartment contain unused blank spaces? These areas are prime real estate for some customization!  Get creative with empty spaces by adding some of the following ideas

  • A gallery wall – Gallery walls are perfect for those who love to collect artwork. Here, you’ll display all your favourite pieces together, adding a vibrant, eye-catching touch to your space.
  • House plants – House plants are ideal for adding a natural touch. As well as introducing some vibrant colors, house plants are proven to positively impact mental health
  • A bookshelf – If you love reading, an empty space can be a great place to store a bookshelf. Add an armchair and a small table for a snug reading nook.

6. Brighten up your apartment

Light is an essential factor for creating a pleasant living environment. Not only can a poorly lit space have you bumping into things, but it can also negatively impact your mood.

Begin by considering how can create maximum natural light. Are chairs or tables blocking windows? If so, rearrange them. Equally, give the panes a clean to prevent dirt from obscuring the sun. Introduce mirrors to darker spaces to reflect light and brighten the area.

Lastly, consider how lamps and overhead lighting can be used to create a sense of mood. Using dimmer switches or different shades of color can enforce your desired vibe.

7. Rent instead of buying furniture

The biggest downside to renovation is cost. When a good coffee table alone can set you back $300, it’s not hard to see how budgets can quickly disappear. That’s why many people opt to rent rather than buy their furniture.

When renting, you avoid the upfront cost and instead pay in installments over a pre-defined period. Best of all, rental furniture can usually be returned at any time and swapped for a separate item.

For those worried about maintenance, some rental providers even offer rent to own furniture. Under this form of plan, you own your furniture when payments are complete.

8. Put up glass shelves

Traditional shelves aren’t always friendly on the eye. Big, bulky units can take up space while detracting from your desired aesthetic.

Glass shelves are a more visually appealing alternative. They’re transparency also creates the illusion of extra space, and adds more natural light to brighten a room.

Even better, glass shelves work as the perfect display piece. They’re perfect for showing off bottles, cocktail glasses, and trophies.

9. Stick with appropriately sized furniture

Bigger doesn’t always mean better. While a large couch might seem good in theory, in practice, it may not be the best fit. It’s always better to choose items that work well within your space, and don’t leave an area feeling restricted or cluttered.

Pick furniture that helps make a room feel bigger. For example, slimline furniture reveals more of the floor, giving a sense of space.

Before choosing furniture, always measure your space carefully. This way, you’ll have a better sense of the optimal dimensions for each item.

10. Rearrange your furniture

Sometimes, the answer isn’t introducing new furniture, it’s making the most of the items you already have. A simple rearrangement of furniture can completely transform a space.

Need convincing? Try some of the tricks below.

  • Divide rooms – Use bookshelves or cabinets to give a sense of separate spaces between rooms.
  • Consider the flow – It should be easy for people to move from one end of the room to another. Create a clear path around furniture so people can pass through easily.
  • Arrange around a focal point – This could be a television, fireplace, or window.

11. Repurpose your guest room

Who says rooms should be designed around a single purpose? When you’re working with a smaller space, there’s no point in a room that goes unused most of the time. Luckily, with multipurpose furniture and the right layout, guest rooms can be transformed from one purpose to another in minutes.

For example, why not swap out standard beds and install a Murphy bed? Throw in a desk and chair, and suddenly, you have an office. It’s the perfect solution for those who work from home or like a separate space to follow their creative muse.

12. Disguise your utilities

Every apartment needs a heating system. But radiators, pipes, and air con units aren’t usually pleasing on the eye. When you’re trying to cultivate a certain look, it’s often better to disguise your utilities.

Radiator covers, for example, can be purchased for a low cost and fitted easily. These covers come in a variety of designs and can suit most aesthetics.

Of course, if you’d rather not see your utilities at all, you can simply hide them from view. Opt for some low-hanging curtains or reposition to a table to conceal unwanted objects.

13. Use more mirrors

Wish your apartment felt bigger? The good news is that there’s an age-old trick that can help you: install more mirrors. Not only do mirrors reflect more light, but they also make spaces feel larger and more open.

For the best impact, try to position your mirrors near a light source. This adds a sense of atmosphere and enforces the illusion of scale.

If you have a hallway, another option is to place mirrors at the far ends of the hall. This creates a ‘tunnel effect,’ so your hallway feels like it stretches on into the distance.

14. Plan for the future

When decorating, think about what your future needs might be. If you’re expecting roommates, children, or pets in your apartment, it’s better to future-proof. Opt for an adaptable space that can be transformed easily when needed.

We’ve talked about the advantages of renting vs buying furniture. If you need to easily adjust your space in the future, renting may be a solid option. You can swap items whenever you need to fit with your changing needs.

It’s worth choosing furniture that is easy to move and transport. An ottoman on wheels, for example, could be moved from the living room to a bedroom if you need extra storage (eg, for a kid’s room).

15. Choose large-scale art

The right artwork and frame can make your home look and feel more luxurious. Choose wisely, though, and it can also create the illusion of size. If you’ve got tall ceilings, for example, choose large-scale art that influences people to look up.

If you don’t have a tall ceiling, try to choose artwork that invokes a sense of scale. For example, a painting that displays a vast landscape or a tall building.

Re-imagine your apartment

Rather than a challange, think of decorating your small apartment as an opportunity. As we’ve explored here, there are plenty of ways you can reimagine your apartment. So, go through our list and see which examples apply to you. Then, get started!

One place you’re forgetting to declutter before your guests arrive for Christmas – decluttering pros say it makes a bigger difference than you think

One place you’re forgetting to declutter before your guests arrive for Christmas – decluttering pros say it makes a bigger difference than you think

The countdown to Christmas is on, and while the excitement is building, decluttering experts are urging us not to forget this one place we need to declutter before guests arrive for the festivities – and it’s an unusual one.

Decluttering can feel like a big and sometimes never-ending chore, which is why there are many places we often forget to declutter. But with this time of year, being a popular time for hosts to whip out their favourite decluttering method and get their home into shape for Christmas, there is one area you shouldn’t forget.

With guests on the way, we look to declutter obvious areas such as the hallway or living room, where visitors will see first. However, experts say you shouldn’t forget to declutter your bathroom cabinets and shelves – here’s why.

Why you need to declutter your bathroom cabinets

Your bathroom cabinet may feel like a private area of your home, but it’s an important step you need to take to make space for incoming guests. Not only does it make your home look more thoughtful and considered, but it also leaves space for guests to make themselves at home, without investing in a temporary bathroom storage idea.

‘One place that we often forget to declutter is the bathroom cabinets or shelves. I always rearrange the resident soaps and bottles in the bathroom to free up a little space for guests’ toiletries. It takes seconds beforehand, but future-me is always grateful when visitors arrive, and everything looks thoughtful, tidy, and ready for them to settle in comfortably without any last-minute fuss,’ explains Catherine Green, sustainable cleaning expert at smol.

‘This is also a great opportunity to clear any bottles stored in the guest room beforehand, so you’re not disturbing guests later or rummaging around once they’ve settled in for the night.’

While it’s easy to let old bottles of toiletries pile up in your cupboards, this chaos is quickly revealed to guests when they’re looking for a cotton pad, mouthwash or shower gel when using your bathroom.

Not only does it look messy, but having overflowing bathroom cupboards can harbour moisture, which in turn leads to damp and mould if left.

‘Layers of products, overfilled baskets, and tightly packed shelves can create small pockets where dampness settles. These hidden spots encourage musty smells and can even lead to discolouration on cabinetry or the back of the cupboard, particularly in smaller bathrooms with limited ventilation,’ explains Soma Pillay, Bathroom Specialist at Bathroom City.

‘Clearing this space before guests arrive allows air to circulate properly, keeps surfaces dry and makes your bathroom feel fresher overall. Streamlining the contents also means you can store guest essentials neatly, such as clean towels, spare toiletries and anything they may need, without items toppling out.

‘A few minutes spent decluttering transforms the vanity unit from a forgotten cupboard into a tidy, hygienic and genuinely welcoming space for Christmas visitors. You’re likely to be gifted toiletries too, so make sure to leave space for the new ones!’

So, before your guests arrive this Christmas, give yourself time to declutter your bathroom cabinets before they arrive. Even if you just spend 15 minutes organising them, it will make a positive difference to your hosting.

Inside The Trilogy Townhouse: A Three-Level Design Story on King’s Road

Inside The Trilogy Townhouse: A Three-Level Design Story on King’s Road

Walking into the Trilogy Townhouse, or better yet, opening a beautifully crafted book, is an experience of its own. Each floor reveals its own mood, yet together they create one seamless story. Tucked along the iconic King’s Road in London, this three-storey townhouse was reimagined to function as a working office, an event space, and a curated furniture showroom, all within a narrow, characterful footprint.
The design challenge was clear from the start: each level needed its own identity, but the entire home still had to read as one cohesive composition. Let’s discover how this was achieved by the designers, Taras Kaminskiy, Aleksandra Shokarova, and Alina Zherepa.

Let’s begin with the kitchen. We see an earthy and grounded palette that feels refined. Rich wood cabinetry introduces warmth, while the travertine backsplash adds luxury. The island becomes the sculptural anchor here: finished in a textured surface and paired with statement bar stools wrapped in patterned upholstery.

Just beyond the kitchen, the dining space introduces a shift in mood. Subtle, darker, and more contemplative. A striking black marble dining table takes center stage. Its fluid and curved legs create a stunning silhouette. Surrounding it, slim-profile chairs keep the arrangement visually light. The shelving behind the table enhances this impression, acting as both storage and display.

The living area is where the aesthetic opens up again, embracing comfort without losing its sophistication. A plush, modular sofa in soft neutrals stretches across the room. Two sculptural lounge chairs upholstered in patterned fabric add personality and a sense of movement. At the center, a layered marble coffee table becomes both a functional surface and a work of art, pulling the eye with its fluid edges.

The bathroom introduces a dramatic shift in atmosphere. It blends rich color and bold stonework. A deep burgundy tub sits like a centerpiece in the room, its glossy finish contrasting beautifully with the layered marble platform beneath it. The stone itself becomes part of the visual story: veins of orange, grey, and cream adding movement and warmth to the space. A fluted marble pedestal sink and matte black fixtures keep the palette modern and refined, while the surrounding terracotta-toned wall panels bring an elegant backdrop.

The staircase acts as the connective tissue of The Trilogy Townhouse. It guides you from one distinct atmosphere to the next. Soft, natural textures—warm wood panels, smooth plaster walls, and gently lit steps—create a calm backdrop for movement. Simultaneously, bold, contemporary artwork adds a surprising burst of colour.

This living space blends soft neutrals with sculptural accents to create an elegant atmosphere. A plush cream sofa, paired with warm-toned cushions, sets a relaxed foundation. The green and textured lounge chairs add a subtle pop of personality.

The black marble coffee tables introduce organic shape and visual weight, grounding the room without interrupting the airy feel. The standout feature—a polished metal and stone fireplace—acts as a modern focal point.

Ruth Langsford’s clever bauble storage trolley makes decorating (and packing away) so much easier – and there’s £60 off it right now

Ruth Langsford’s clever bauble storage trolley makes decorating (and packing away) so much easier – and there’s £60 off it right now

Hands up if you’ve just unpacked your Christmas decorations and found yourself wincing at the tangle of baubles, crushed ornaments and half-forgotten bits you stuffed away in a hurry last January.

If this is you, you’ll know how annoying slapdash storage can be. That’s why Loose Women‘s Ruth Langsford said she’s been ‘coveting’ this genius solution to the chaos in the form of the Balsam Hill Deluxe Rolling Bauble Chest, RRP £279. She finally treated herself to the premium storage trolley last year to keep every bauble and festive decor perfectly organised.

The structured trolley has customisable drawers that can be set up for glass baubles, long baubles, oversized ornaments and even sentimental pieces you want kept extra safe.

In her reel, she unzips the chest to reveal an impressively thought-out storage system with pull-out drawers, adjustable dividers and labelled sections for everything.

Instead of rummaging through mountains of boxes, newspaper and bubble wrap, Ruth now simply wheels out the trolley, opens a drawer and instantly sees her full festive collection, colour-coordinated, categorised by size and shape and most importantly, safely intact.

And then when Christmas is over, she can store her decorations properly for next year. At a time when most of us feel the post-festive comedown, having an organised way to pack up Christmas will surely soften the blow, making it feel easier and, dare I say it, more enjoyable.

Ruth admits it wasn’t cheap, calling it ‘a bit of an indulgence’, but it makes her very happy. She believes this ‘amazing bauble holder trolley’ is worth the investment. And I tend to agree, as it will last for years and save countless headaches, making both decorating and packing away so much smoother.

Ruth also revealed that she’s had her pre-lit Balsam Hill tree (similar to this Silverado Slim tree, from £239 for 5ft, during Balsam Hill’s sale) for an impressive 15 years. Not only has it stood the test of time seriously well, but its slimline design means it’s also a great choice for small spaces or rooms where you might want height and impact without a bulky base.

Ruth’s chest is undeniably premium, even with the current discount of £60, but you don’t need to splurge to get the same decoration organising satisfaction. Here are a few budget-friendly alternatives.

A little smart storage now means next year’s decorating starts with excitement, not chaos. And Ruth’s trolley setup shows what a difference it can make.

Will you be investing in this storage trolley?
