Tessa Muga and Román Macià went to see this apartment on a whim — it was the last stop on their hunt, and the listing didn’t have any photos, but they were intrigued nonetheless. As it turns out, they fell in love with the home. The previous owner was an artist, and while they loved her style, the home wasn’t totally move-in ready for their family. They decided to renovate, making structural changes to open up spaces for the family to enjoy together without losing the charm of the home. The couple says that their duplex home is “the perfect fusion between the mediterranean vibes downstairs and the mountain style upstairs, with the wooden beams and dark colors.” When they aren’t decorating their own home, Tessa and Román are working together at their real estate agency, The Home Hunter, or Somos Nido, an interior design studio that specializes in cozy and homey spaces.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: I love to say that my style is just coziness, and I guess in my house I went with a more rustic style.
Inspiration: Our inspiration comes from particular places like the countryside or the seaside.
Favorite Element: My living room… it makes me feel really at home.
Biggest Challenge: We had to open the space, so the budget was all for the architectural work. The project was very long and we had several problems, but we already have forgotten them because we love our home so much.
Proudest DIY: The headboard in my room.
Is there something unique about your home or the way you use it? We have no doors in our primary bathroom, so we have a blue double door that looks like a closet but is actually a tiny room were we have the toilet.
What are your favorite products you have bought for your home and why? Definitely the apartment lighting, I love it. And some of the pictures I have around the house.
Please describe any helpful, inspiring, brilliant, or just plain useful small space maximizing and/or organizing tips you have: Don’t install an open cabinet in the bathroom! Try to be clever and organized with the storage.
Does your home reflect your home country/city in any way? The downstairs area is totally Mediterranean, but upstairs it’s like being in a countryside cabin. We mixed both places on purpose.
What are your favorite places to shop for home décor that can only be found in your country? Santa & Cole is an amazing lighting store.
Finally, what’s your absolute best home secret or decorating advice? Be yourself. Define your needs and play with your ideas without any fear, letting your creativity go will bring you to your perfect imperfections and identity.
