According to a survey by home service platform CraftJack of 1,111 young Americans, about 61 percent said that “pets are the new kids and plants are the new pets.” With the world still trying to contain a pandemic, and with rising living costs and stagnating wages, it’s not difficult to see why many prefer pets and plants over babies. In fact, the study even shows that the average amount spent on a houseplant over its lifetime is $566 — chump change compared to the average amount needed to raise a child until age 18: about $272,049.
The survey also found other interesting tidbits from plant parents. When it comes to names, Fred is the most popular. The rest of the top five composed of the following: George, Cornelius, Aloejandro, and Harry.
As for the most creative plant names, the top spot belonged to Keanu Leaves (so breathtaking!), followed by other equally witty names like Fernie Sanders, Brotato, Edgar Aloe Poe, and Baron Von Trap.
CraftJack also revealed the kinds of houseplants Americans like the most:
“Succulents are America’s favorite houseplant… and why not?” the site wrote. “They’re adorable, don’t take up a lot of space, come in a dizzyingly wide variety, and they’re relatively affordable.”
When sorted by generation, millennials’ favorites are easy-to-maintain types such as the aloe, snake plant, and pothos. As for boomers, they like the cactus, spider plant, and fern. And finally, for the those aspiring to become plant-fluencers, the trendiest (most Instagrammable) houseplants were the Monstera, fiddle leaf fig, and the air plant.
