I am the first to admit that I’m a bit of a bedding snob. I have a very clear idea of what I like (and don’t like) on my bed, and I tend to stick to what I know. In most instances, my preferences are just as much about style as they are comfort. Don’t get me wrong — there is nothing better than cozying up in a soft, cloud-like bed at the end of the day, but maintaining the right vibe in my bedroom is important to me, too. That usually translates to linen or (patternless) percale — but do you know what definitely doesn’t fit the aesthetic? Shiny, silky sheets.
I know, I know — a bit harsh, right? By this point, we’ve all heard about how good silk pillowcases can be for our sleep routines. Not only are they soft and cool, but they can reduce friction, helping you wake up frizz and wrinkle free. Trust me when I say, I am definitely not immune to waking up looking like a goblin and could definitely benefit from those two perks, but for the longest time I just couldn’t get over the aesthetic downgrade silk pillowcases would lend to my bed (at least in my eyes).

When it comes to bedding, I’m kinda particular. It’s not about the color, print, brand name, or detailing. The reason I’m so picky about what goes on my bed (and which mattress I’m sleeping on) is this: getting quality sleep is very important to me. Without at least eight solid hours of snoozing, I’m not exactly at my best — believe me, you don’t want to face my grouchiness after an uncomfortable night’s sleep. So when I find a set of sheets that works for me, I order multiples. The only problem? Good sheets usually come with a hefty price tag, and since I’m not willing to compromise on my Zzz’s, I often have to sacrifice the health of my bank account to buy the bedding I want.

Admittedly, I was skeptical when I stumbled across the home goods company that promises to deliver high quality at “a radically lower price.” At less than $90 for a Queen sheet set (my favorite sheets are a whopping $250), there was no way I’d wake up perky and ready to face the day, right? Wrong. I took Quince’s Organic Cotton Percale Sheet Set for a spin, and let me tell you, I was shook. After one wash, the set felt almost identical to the expensive options I’m used to splurging on.

It wasn’t until recently that I became hip to percale sheets. I had always been a linen gal, but after literal years of wear and tear endured by my favorite Parchute Linen Sheet Set, it was time to switch it up. Linen sheets aren’t always easy to love right off the bat. It usually takes me at least a few washes, maybe even a couple of months, to get them to the highly coveted, softly wrinkled, luxuriously cozy stage. The snag? I got to test West Elm’s European Flax Linen Sheets, and when it comes to bedding that’s irresistible straight out of the package, these are high achievers (thus, Best List winners!). I’ll admit, I was tempted to put them on my bed right after I opened them, but I followed the brand’s recommendation to give them a first wash for extra safety and mattress protection from dye and pilling. Initial wash out of the way, I dove right into my set, a sumptuously warm, heathered-clay hue dubbed Terracotta Melange that almost seemed to glow from within.
