Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: The house was built in 1907 and the architectural style is folk Victorian. It has a wraparound porch and a beautiful chicken coop in the backyard that my husband built. We live in downtown San Marcos and can walk to the river and parks. I have two redheaded daughters (my husband and I are not redheads) who share a room upstairs.
Although there is a seven-year gap between them, their shared space speaks to both their needs and wants. We purchased the home in 2015 and started remodeling it in 2020. So far, we have remodeled the primary bathroom downstairs, added a new roof (a standing-seam metal roof), remodeled the kitchen/dining room, updated the living room, and transformed the primary walk-in closet. I love color, shiplap, funky designs, and conversation pieces! Although I try to highlight the original features of the home, I mix in some retro vibes here and there because I love mid-century. This year my husband and I will be remodeling the laundry room, main hallway, and our primary bedroom.
My identity is reflected all over my home through my love for mid-century. I love quirky art and have showcased that — especially in my closet. I love loud colors and furniture styles. I love old homes and concentrate on the parts of my home that make it original, like the stained glass window in the kitchen, original long-leaf pine floors, and pocket doors between the dining room and living room. There are two fireplaces downstairs and I make them focal points in my design. I love antiques and vintage, so the only style home that is for me is anything “old.”
What is your favorite room and why? My latest project, my closet. I’ve been living here for eight years and I finally have a closet. Old homes and their quirks, like no closet space! I have a beautiful abstract floral rug that has pinks and reds. Then I have this funky sculpted chair that is hot pink that sits in the corner. The light fixture is purple and mid-century inspired. The artwork is all from Scout Design Studio (my favorite vendor to shop right now). In addition to interior design, I also love fashion. My closet is where all my prized possessions rest.
Describe your home’s style in 5 words or less: A colorful, eclectic, whimsical farmhouse.
Any advice for creating a home you love? Highlight original features of the home. If the house was built in the ’70s, then embrace that time period. Also, put your own personal touch on it. Collaborate the two styles. Listen to your gut.

Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: This is the first space where I’ve had the complete freedom (and the means) to do whatever I want. A few of the most important principles when designing the space were keeping a balance of minimalism and maximalism, utilization of storage space, and providing the perfect backdrop for vintage treasures and art. Luckily for me, my partner isn’t as picky about which vase to display and where, but I’m always trying to honor both our styles and interests — which is a fun challenge.
I’m an artist and my partner is a musician, so we are always expressing ourselves whether it’s conscious or not. With regards to our home, there isn’t a thing that wasn’t considered, from the floor plan to the utensils, so I’d say it’s all a reflection of us! It has always been really important for me to consolidate and only keep objects I love, and as a designer for a wall art company as well as a vintage seller @virga on Instagram, the apartment is a revolving door of objects and art. An important room that really reflects us is our shared studio, where our makeshift double computer desk (an outdoor terrazzo table from cb2) houses our photoshopping and music software.
Describe your home’s style in 5 words or less: Eclectic, moody, refined yet unusual
What is your favorite room and why? Our favorite room is probably the living room. It’s the first thing you see when you enter, and it contains some of our absolute favorite pieces: an ’80s waterfall style tessellated stone coffee table and the crown jewel 1920s Czech glass decanter that lives in our custom built-in shelves. It’s where we spend most of our time and entertain, and it leads directly to our second favorite space, the kitchen.
What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? The last thing I found for my home is a vintage black iridescent raku vase. It was initially going to be listed in the shop, but I couldn’t resist keeping it, at least for a little while.
Any advice for creating a home you love? It takes time! Don’t be so precious and let it be lived in!

Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: So, I actually submitted my old place over a year ago, and I thought it might be fun to see how style evolves, even in just a year and a half! I run a furniture selling business, and got super into ’80s Art Deco. However, the more I sold, my style changed. And I came to really fall in love with Space Age pieces and MCM, with some Art Deco still mixed in. I also got a corporate work-from-home job, which allowed me to move into my own space. I knew I wanted three very distinct vibes for sleeping, relaxing, and working.
All of the rooms of my apartment are closed off from each other. So for the living room I focused on a natural vibe with warm tones, using the couch and rug as my inspiration. In my office I knew I wanted a bright Space Age vibe to bring me some energy on long days. I also wanted to include a lil dining nook since; this is technically my “dining room” as well. Once again used the rug in here for inspo, but also the vintage yellow plastic storage drawers and the art I hung above it. I’m actually in the process of creating a full floor-to-ceiling gallery wall in there as well. And the bedroom was based around the turmeric bedding and rug, and everything fell into place around it. Everything is thrifted, and my biggest splurge was my vintage $500 crushed velvet couch. Otherwise everything was less than $100 or even free. I love a good deal.
I identify as queer and as a theater artist. My queerness definitely plays into my style. I think discovering I was queer took a lot of getting to know myself, and in doing so I found a very distinct style as well.
Describe your home’s style in 5 words or less: Eclectic, curated, thrifted, space age, MCM
What is your favorite room and why? My favorite room is my living room. It has all my favorite pieces in it. The green waterfall ottoman, the arch lamp, the crushed velvet couch, the huge piece of art above my sitting chair. The sun streams in at the perfect angle for me to get some rays while watching TV. I feel relaxed and at ease being surrounded by things I love.
What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? Got a cute lil thrifted pottery dish for my keys. I love finding handmade pottery for like $2 at thrift stores. The weirder it is the more I need it
Any advice for creating a home you love? Get to know yourself, and you’ll get to know your style. And change doesn’t have to happen overnight. Slowly curate items you love, and soon enough you’ll see a style accumulating. Also, never feel like you need to spend four figures, or even three figures on a really solid unique piece of furniture. And sometimes it might take weeks or months, but I promise you can find the EXACT item you want thrifted.

Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: My dog Georgia and I moved from Bushwick, Brooklyn to this apartment in the Upper West Side of Manhattan during the height of the pandemic. It was very difficult to find new housing back when in-person tours were rarely allowed. I work in real estate in NYC myself and know exactly how honest or dishonest a single ad online can be. I really had to just trust my gut on a decision and I’d say I nailed it!
I am so deeply in love with NYC, but especially this neighborhood and everything it has to offer… which is everything! Our favorite thing about having our home here is that Georgia has Central Park to the left, Riverside Park to the right, and a plethora of other dog runs to choose from every day. As the center of my world, to see her being a happy pup, makes me a happy person.
I think my apartment truly reveals my Aquarius self to the world. I’m dark, moody, creative, and mysterious, while also being quite orderly. My apartment has a perfect mixture of thrift flips and DIYs, sale section steals, olden-day charm, and modern organizational hacks. It’s eclectic yet super functional and quite minimal without lacking design and character. It really is exactly what I want!
Describe your home’s style in 5 words or less: Moody-romantic, but welcoming
What is your favorite room and why? I love my plants between by bedroom and office spaces so much! In a studio with only one open space and one window, they give a wonderful feeling of the outside coming in. I am so thankful to them for providing us with clean air and lively decor.
What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? My last purchase was actually a couple of new plants. If you are a New Yorker in need of greenery or flowers, check out PlantShed and support a local family-owned business!
Any advice for creating a home you love? I am someone who absolutely believes that even a rental is worth making adjustments to. Whether a home is a home for one year or 10 years, it is deserving of love and attention. You deserve to be excited to come home and feel welcomed by your surroundings.
In a city so buzzing with people and activity, your apartment is your safe space to be alone, so you may as well love it. My advice is to ditch the idea that it’s a temporary rental and just make the changes you want to! Save the old stuff if you’re concerned about deposits and know that it’s worth the extra day it takes to put it back in order when you leave. It’s one day of work vs 364 (or more) days of enjoyment. Just do the ‘thing’ and make it yours!

Name: Sean Robinson and mini poodle, Carson
Location: Hells Kitchen — New York, New York
Type of home: Two-bedroom pre-war walk-up converted to open loft
Size: 650 square feet
Years lived in: 2 years, owned

Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: Gut renovated and fully furnished with CB2/Restoration Hardware. This was a cozy two-bedroom walk-up in a prewar building that I converted into a contemporary industry loft with high ceilings, exposed beams, and integrated European-style open kitchen (reform).
It’s a corner unit featuring windows in each room, and lots of natural light. I purchased right after the Covid pandemic hit in 2020. I met a guy (Matt Giddens) and we dated for a few weeks. Although it didn’t work out, we became friends and he designed my entire apartment from A-to-Z. The artwork is by my friend Kan Seidel (@kandyboots).
I am a 37-year-old, (his/him) who works as a video editor. This home is not only conveniently located a few blocks from the office, but it reflects my minimalist style and with a home office allows me to work remote. I edit short-form content (trailers, teasers, promos) for reality TV shows, such as “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and “Catfish.”
Describe your home’s style in 5 words or less: Contemporary Industry loft with Scandinavian accents
What is your favorite room and why? Living room flows into the kitchen, which is my favorite area, because it’s all open and has that “wow factor” with Danish furniture, stainless steal custom-fit countertops, and Burmese teakwood table with black Danish stools. All the lights/sconces are from an Oregon-based company (Lighthouse), and porcelain matte finish lightbulbs and antique knobs for dimmers.
I really love the Feng Shui of the space and it gives off a quintessential NYC vibe, with exposed brick, ceiling beams, and fire escape. This apartment is especially sentimental because I had no parental financial support and paid for everything on my own. To me, it serves as a crossroads for all my friends to visit.
What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? The very last purchase was four Afteroom Chair, Non-Upholstered from Danish company MenuSpace.
Any advice for creating a home you love? One’s home is their sanctuary, and it can impact your mood. So create a space that lifts your spirits.
