The most suitable filtration method for you will depend mainly on the most pressing contaminants, your environment, budget, the state of your water, and how much energy you’re willing to put into filtration.

Here are some ways you can filter water in your home and make it more drinkable.

1. Boiling

Boiling is a fast and straightforward way to decontaminate your home water. Most microorganisms cannot survive the boiling process and are quickly destroyed. Boiling water is especially beneficial because the minerals found in tap water are retained. However, while boiling water is easy and uncomplicated, there are some downsides to it. For one, it’s time-consuming to boil AND cool water before drinking. It also adds to your energy bill, and despite how it looks, it does not remove any heavy metals or chemicals present.

Contaminants like chlorine, fluoride, and lead are retained in your water. More so, boiling can even increase their concentrations due to some of the water evaporating.

2. UV treatment

Most people use these tablets to purify water from lakes or streams, but you can also use them for your home water.

Water purification tablets contain iodine, chlorine, or chlorine dioxide. These chemicals are responsible for killing harmful pathogens. The effectiveness of the tablets depends on the concentration of the chemicals they contain. By the way, water purification tablets may get rid of pathogens, but they don’t work against harmful chemicals at all.

Chances are that fluoride is present in your water intended to help with tooth decay, but studies now show that excess fluoride can be harmful, leading to all kinds of diseases and health issues.

Excessive exposure to fluoride causes discoloration of teeth, bone weakness, thyroid problems, neurological problems, and heart issues. If you’re wondering how to remove fluoride from water, you can try out some specialized filters like

  • Reverse osmosis units:

Reverse osmosis units use pressure to force your drinking water through a semipermeable membrane. Small particles and chemicals do not pass through so that only clean water can make it to the other side. This is an effective way to get rid of fluoride, and other toxins, although it may prove to be time consuming.
