This Stylish 417-Square-Foot Apartment Used to Be a Basement

Name: Katsia Augustin
Location: Stamford, Connecticut
Type of home: Basement Apartment
Size: 417 square feet
Years lived in: Renting the apartment 1 year, but lived in the main house with parents for all my life

Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: I decided to renovate and convert my parent’s basement into an apartment, and I’ve been living there on my own for a year now. My space is constantly evolving (I don’t think I’ll ever be done)! I love finding wall art, plants, and one-of-a-kind pieces that feel like my home.

Describe your home’s style in 5 words or less: Modern, cultured, eclectic, artistic, and comfortable

I would consider myself an artsy person. I received my B.S. in Interior Design, and I’m an avid traveler. I’ve been to over 24 countries, which have inspired the feel and look of my home.

What is your favorite room and why? My favorite space would be the living room. I love my comfortable mid-century-inspired West Elm couch and my large rug. The color in the rug pulls everything together in the space.

What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? The last piece that I purchased was an old-school record player, and I bought it at Remix Market, a secondhand shop in my home city. It’s a furniture piece, and I absolutely love it! My brother and I are planning on refurbishing it by adding a sound system and my modern player.

Any advice for creating a home you love? Be inspired by trends, but always create your space with the things you love. It’s the key to still loving your space after trends come and go.
