Flowing Garden House is a large, luxury family compound, built for two entrepreneur brothers in the city of Zhangzhou, China. Created by architectural firm More Than Arch Studio, the 1700 square metre home stands apart from the majority of modern houses in China. This home is composed of three parts, which include a private unit for each brother’s family and a communal space for family gatherings, fitness and more. The social spaces centre around a peaceful courtyard design with a huge pond and majestic trees. The hope for this unique home design is that it will become a hub for extended family, and be the home fire that forges memories for generations to come.
It is a huge pond design that gives this home a feeling of close family connection. The central pond courtyard kindles a blanketing sense of serenity that flows into each branch of the house.
At night, the courtyard is a warm and welcoming space under soft exterior lighting. Focussed LED spotlights dance across the stone steps that lead down to the pond to create a pretty, tiered effect and promote safety in low light.
The concrete steps around the pond serve as a place to sit and contemplate by the waters edge.
The modern steps descend into the water, building an abstract design under the clear surface.
LED strips follow the wider edge of the pond, achieving a bold, contemporary look.
Mature trees thrive around the perimeter of the courtyard, creating height, texture, and natural beauty.
A traditional Chinese tea room opens up fully to the calming courtyard view. Tea drinking is elemental in Southern Fujian, as well as an integral part of hospitality.
With bi-fold doors drawn back, the tea room design is extended by a narrow terrace that leads to the water’s edge.
An indoor heated pool is placed in the basement, with lounge areas and meeting places situated alongside it.
A sunken courtyard blesses the basement areas with natural light and a beautiful natural panorama.
The material palette throughout the home compound remains consistent in warm wood grain and board-formed concrete. The palette is softened slightly in the two private residential volumes to create a comfortable vibe, where raw concrete walls are minimised by beige stucco.
In the larger, more open social spaces, cool, textural concrete rules with little additional decoration. Bamboo ceilings create a warm counterbalance.
Interior lighting is focussed and atmospheric.
A huge skylight brings sunlight to the basement swimming pool.
Fair-faced concrete and open walkways build a monumental aesthetic through the home compound.
The residential units that belong to each brother and their family are merged into one building but are entirely separate inside. They are entered via two independent, staggered entrance halls from a ribbon courtyard to establish privacy.
The combined home is equipped with a grand dining room, which is granted the best views of the internal courtyard design. The grand dining room is furnished with two round dining tables that can seat up to ten people each, to contend with a large number of family members and guests during the festivals. A smaller courtyard backs the dining room to create an open flow.
Fireplaces create a heartwarming glow, serving as an attraction for cosy gatherings.
The scale of respective spaces are distinct from each other to conjure contrasting moods.
The ribbon courtyard links all areas, threading an outdoor tour.
From stone steps at the northeast entrance, under shaded eaves, and through a series of narrow and wider spatial arrangements, the courtyard pathway is a private trail of tranquillity.
Via the south side of the building, a lower corridor reaches the terrace where the whole view fully unfolds.
For many years, the use of courtyards has been commonplace in local houses to improve environmental conditions and accomplish natural division between private and communal spaces.
Plants that flourish over time become earthed in family memories and in future generations.
Light wells touch each interior space with a hint of nature.
Porthole windows align to allow line of sight to pass through from one space to the next.
Guest bedrooms are arranged above the north side of the leisure zone.
Room sizes are compact and cosy, with serene garden views to the south.
Bedrooms are given an outdoor connection with a small courtyard.
Both of the master bedrooms are situated upon the south facing side of the second floor, which is faced toward woodland that leads to the sea.
Other than some land to the south, where the sea is narrowly observable through the trees, there are no remarkable views to be had, since the height of the building is restricted to just ten metres. This makes the courtyard and landscaped pathways all the more precious.
The 30-metre-wide dense forest belt serves as a windbreak and shield from typhoons. The 3-acre, rectangular residential plot has its shorter sides at the north and south. Neighbouring buildings stand to the east and west.
The entrance is on the north side of the road, which meanders into the social leisure space. The south of the home compound is the private residential area. The division of the two independent residential units fluidly forms the ribbon courtyard.
Just off the northernmost corridor, multi-function rooms within the two units can be used as a casual dining room, for arts, as a reading room, or for games.
The basement is equipped with a living room, home theatre, a snug, a laundry room, and spare bedrooms.

Resting gently upon the undulating green terrain of Bragança Paulista in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, this luxury home design respects its locality. Created by architectural firm Yuri Vital, the 693 square metre house was designed as a perfectly linear volume, which drinks in both intimate and far-flung views of the beautiful valley ahead. A board-formed concrete exterior textures the modern home exterior, along with huge expanses of wood-slatted window shutters. Cantilevered volumes float lightly between oblique structural walls at each side of the house. Elegant support columns meet the grassy ground or sink delicately into the water mirror that rounds the front of the property.
Raised high on elegant stilts, this linear home design appears to float weightlessly over its scenic surroundings of mature shrubs and trees, and a blanket of lush green grass.
The heightened disposition of the home grants a more desirable viewpoint over the valley that unfolds in front of it.
The entire front face of the modern home exterior is opened up to the peaceful panorama by edge-to-edge windows.
Wooden window shutters filter the direct sunlight to keep the home cool under the Brazilian sunshine.
Massive oblique concrete wings protrude from the sides of the house, giving it a feeling of complete privacy despite its largely glass composition.
The shutters can be fully retracted so that the homeowners may enjoy an entirely unobstructed view.
Slim support columns bed into the leafy terrain underneath the house, disappearing subtly into the shadows there.
Once inside the home, a wide, open plan living space is alive with natural light and an airy atmosphere. Cognac coloured leather chairs and a coordinating leather sofa add warming accents to a cool grey and white lounge decor scheme. The cognac upholstery and natural wooden furniture frames complement the expanse of wooden shutters at huge living room windows.
The large living room layout enjoys a scarcity of support points that leaves the view of the valley wide open.
An orange curved sofa adds a burst of energy to the colour palette of a second lounge area. The bright accent piece is counterbalanced by an exposed concrete statement wall and cool grey floor tiles. A long linear suspension light stretches across the lounge, crossing above a unique glass coffee table.
A formal dining area separates the two lounge spaces.
The large dining space is furnished to welcome up to ten people at mealtimes.
At the end of the long living space, several triangular hanging chairs dangle lazily in the sunlight. The chairs can be turned toward one another in a conversational arrangement, or swivel to serve as private reading pods.
The triangular hanging chairs are inspired by the oblique angles within the architecture of the home itself. Triangular windows slice interesting fenestration around the property. A glass entryway almost disappears under the visual weight of the main concrete volume.
A decorative pool makes the core of the central courtyard design. Stone walls build a rustic border around the pool and the home perimeter. Outdoor staircases lead from the courtyard up to a glass balcony and into the home.
Board formed concrete walls give the home an industrial essence.
Delicate silhouettes of nature counterbalance the industrial-style weight of the architecture.
The pool at the front of the property provides charming reflection.
The modern home sinks softly into the hillside.
The home design is arranged as a U-shaped layout. Social living spaces are all gathered within the south-facing wing, whilst the private bedroom spaces are grouped at the north-facing side of the house. The west-facing transitional space hooks around the courtyard, pulling in views on both sides.
The stunning green environment encircles the entire house.
A sense of serenity sparkles across the water mirror.
The unique composition of the home creates individual moments of privacy and connection.
Private balconies accompany the bedroom suites.
Pipework is picked out under a bright orange coating rather than disguised and hidden, which adds the industrial essence of the exterior.
The massive structure teeters on tiny anchor points that reflect in the pool’s sunlit waters.
Glass walls fashion a permeable dwelling that feels one with the outer environment.
The wood-slatted window shutters deliver magical light play over the home interior.
The home sinks into the cushion of sloping terrain.
Roof overhangs provide shade to the inner and outdoor living spaces.
A large terrace with a rectangular swimming pool stretches the width of the property.
A winding driveway snakes up to the house from the main road, rising steadily through the landscape. The U-shaped house folds protectively around the private courtyard design.
The south-facing social wing is segmented into mismatched angular parts for cover and ventilation.
In the evening, the house lights up the landscape like a horizontal lantern.
The illuminated side wings ignite the inner patio under the night sky.
Site plan showing terrain and the water mirror that fills the front of the property and the central courtyard.
Floor plan illustrating the U-shaped layout of the home interior. Aside from the separate kitchen and pantry, the fluid sequence of social areas is composed of lounges and dining areas. Bedroom suites and their private balconies take up the opposite side of the perimeter.

Linear concrete volumes build this sleek and luxurious 1,260 square metre home design, located in Son Vida, Palma, Spain. Created by Osvaldo Luppi Architects, the deluxe villa features extensive terraces, which include a large outdoor swimming pool to enjoy under the Mediterranean sun. Outdoor living areas make the most of long days and warm nights on the south-facing multi-level terraces, which are stepped to follow the topography of the hillside. Walls of glass retract to adjoin the exterior with interior volumes, where clean white & grey walls and golden wood tone meld in marvellous spaces. Be sure to check out the walkthrough video of this spectacular Mediterranean villa at the end of the tour.
The modern facade slices crisply into the rolling hillside of this sought after residential area, which is referred to locally as the ‘Beverly HIlls of Mallorca’.
In this elevated position, Villa Marola boasts fabulous views over the capital city of Palma and the surrounding countryside.
The luxury house exterior comes alive at night, issuing great lengths of light from its glass fronted volume.
Inside the luxurious property, clean white & pale grey walls colour a fresh feel, whilst golden wood tone adds a mellow warmth.
The living room is an airy space with a simple yet stylish composition of modern lounge furniture. An L-shaped sofa gently hugs the perimeter of a rounded rectangle coffee table, opposite a couple of swivel armchairs. A modern fireplace and log store cuts darkly into the back wall, setting a stripe of contrast against the matt white paintwork.
The contemporary tufted sofa and chic lounge chairs pale into insignificance against the spellbinding view of Palma. Retractable glass walls let in the blissful breeze.
At night, the surrounding hills twinkle magically with the lights of the capital city. Inside, recessed spotlights distribute an even glow, whilst perimeter LEDs highlight the texture of a wood slatted TV feature wall.
Built-in units float a few inches above the floor tile to maintain the perception of open space in the clean layout. A planter is bedded into the top to create a run of greenery through the dining room, all the way to the fireplace in the lounge.
Another bed of plants is cut right into the floor of the hallway, which creates a sense connection with the green hillside location. Textured concrete ripples a cool backdrop, whilst wood wall cladding offers a counteracting smooth finish and warmth.
The rectangular pool shimmers across the front of the interior lounge and dining space, whilst the outdoor lounge aligns with the kitchen.
A modern outdoor sofa is positioned for comfortably taking in the views.
A huge white marble and wood grain kitchen island faces toward the wide pool terrace and the sweeping panorama. Unique kitchen pendant lights fall at varying heights to create a sculptural installation of lustrous copper.
The luxurious white marble and wooden finishes continue across the back wall of the kitchen, where a deeply recessed planter is built into the backsplash to simulate a mini landscape view in the windowless wall.
A sculptural staircase design connects all three levels of the villa, rising from the access area at the base of the property, through the main living level and up to the private bedrooms.
Solid wood balustrades carve out a rise of asymmetrical geometry.
Wood slatted feature walls bring texture to the stairwell, which is exaggerated under concealed LED ribbons.
Upstairs, a master suite and three bedrooms each have their own ensuite bathroom and balcony area. The door to the ensuite and closets are camouflaged within a wall of smooth wood panelling in the master. A glass balustrade allows the majestic hillside views to be enjoyed from an outdoor chair, from the cushioned end of bed bench, or when enjoying breakfast in bed.
A built-in bathtub fills the adjacent wall, positioned perfectly for gazing out at the vista.
Floor vases fashion a pretty moment in a blank hallway.
The property also has an indoor pool down on the access level.
The long driveway that leads up to the home enters the shade of a carport before turning into the garage.
A skylight fills the deep cover with natural light.
Plant beds grow a welcoming entryway.
The restricted palette of materials enhances continuity between interior and exterior areas.
Public floor plan with social living areas, including the main sun terrace, swimming pool, and the outdoor living room. We can also see the long and dramatic driveway approach to the property here. A tall outdoor staircase provides a pedestrian entrance.
On the access floor plan, we can see where the car parking garage is bedded beneath the main living room, and where the indoor swimming pool is situated beneath the sun deck.
The private floor plan illustrates the layout of the master bedroom suite with large ensuite bathroom and private terrace. We can also observe the even distribution of space between the remaining three bedrooms, ensuite bathrooms, and terraces.

On a 1,000 square metre south-facing plot, Villa Anguli overlooks Camp de Mar, Mallorca, from a privileged elevated position. Created by E5 Living, the 399 square metre state-of-the-art Mediterranean residence boasts spectacular sea views that have influenced its geometric architecture and sleek glass facade. Superior interior luxury is realised in chic modern furniture and a clean minimalist approach. White walls, plenty of light and high ceilings make perfect gallery space for a covetable collection of contemporary works by Damien Hirst, Andy Warhol, and Banksy. The artwork injects lively bursts of colour over three floors of seamless spaces that each pull toward the panorama.
Villa Anguli’s geometric architecture projects at a sharp oblique angle from its built-up base on the hillside. This irregular form allows the villa to absorb glorious sea views through the entire width of its sleek glass facade.
An original, wide slatted roof design enhances the geometric nature of the architecture and shades the interior from the strong sunlight.
Isolated high up the hillside, built into the rock, the villa is embraced by breathtaking views of sea and sky.
With views of the cool, sparkling waterfront, there simply had to be a pool up here.
The wide swimming pool design stretches the width of the villa, disappearing abruptly beneath the oblique wing.
A high perimeter wall privately separates the villa from the road.
At night, the exterior lighting scheme ignites excitement around the terraces and tiered grounds of the villa.
Glass balustrades invisibly border an elevated walkway into the villa from the pool deck, leaving the vast windows of the facade unobstructed.
Taking a dip in the swimming pool whilst looking out over the bay feels just like diving into the bright blue sea itself. Cap Andritxol headland rolls in the distance.
An outdoor living room is arranged on the pool terrace, to make the most of the excellent Mediterranean weather. Inside the luxury villa, an interior living room unfolds with a double-sided lounge and a formal dining area. Four large dining room pendant lights descend from the impressive ceiling height at the centre of the space, where more blue skies cut through the white concrete structure.
The lengthier side of the sofa arrangement looks inward toward the fireplace. A comfortable pouf provides a small footrest to get toes toasty in the winter months. A large area rug spreads a cosy, cream base beneath the modern lounge layout. An assortment of grey accent pillows contrast with the cream sofa upholstery.
The wide slatted roof treatment creates light play across the floors and terraces that resembles a deck, or a pier going out to sea.
The interior plan pales within the spectacular architectural manipulation of space and light. Sunlight streams through clerestory windows that frame artistic views of the roofline and skyscape. Retractable walls merge the indoor-outdoor living experience to embrace the island’s beautiful climate.
There is peaceful harmony between the views and interior distribution.
Premium materials shape the modern construction.
Artwork by some of the world’s leading artists provide enthralling colour and character.
Wide open interior spaces, long white walls, high ceilings and plentiful light makes this home a marvellous gallery.
After dark, a wonderful modern lighting scheme of subtle recessed spotlights, perimeter light strips, stair lights and flush-fitted wall lights set the whole place aglow. The distribution of light calls equal attention upon the art and the architecture.
The entire upper level is dedicated to a luxurious master bedroom suite. Up here, a courtyard grows a tropical jungle theme in the centre of the floor plan. On one side, the green interval makes a fabulous headboard feature wall…
..On the opposite side, the encased mini jungle breaks the hallway toward the master bathroom. Fitted closets line the opposite side of the passage.
A walk-out terrace boasts vistas of the coastline.
A narrow interior hallway leads to each of the three first story bedrooms, but they are a also delightfully united on the exterior side by the sun terrace.
The artwork that creates an eye-catching draw to the top of this staircase is Kindness, 2011 by Damien Hirst.
Sandy beaches, water sports, excellent restaurants, cafes, shops, and the 18 hole “Golf de Andratx” course await in Camp de Mar.
Puerto Andratx lays just 5 minutes drive away for more bars, restaurants, shopping, boutiques and the yacht club.
Palma’s International Airport is just a 25 minute drive.
On the ground floor plan, we can see the even scale of three double bedrooms, each with their own ensuite bathroom. Sliding glass doors unify the bedrooms with the outdoor space and swimming pool. We can also observe the angular nature of the open plan living area, which cuts across the cantilevered sun terrace. The ground floor of the villa has been evenly split between indoor and outdoor living spaces, with retractable walls blurring the boundary.
The upper floor plan illustrates the master suite in detail. The actual bedroom is situated right at the front of the villa to plant the bed up by the view. The bedroom also links with its own sun terrace, which is laid upon the oblique angle of the living room below.
There is also a spacious, private roof terrace. A parking garage for three cars is located at the back of the villa, and leads directly to lift access to all floors.
