Dark spaces set a strong image with a heavy mood. They appear dramatic and serious, cool and confident. So, what happens when you inject a little colour… Or a lot? These two modern home designs explore the combination of colourful brights in dark spaces, showing how to hit the balance just right. Our first home tour takes place in a charcoal grey home interior that is uplifted with an array of punchy furniture pieces to achieve a 50/50 blend. In contrast, home design number two employs just a couple of electric blue interludes to shake off the shadows of a grey and black backdrop. Each offers a different ratio of colour to achieve exciting aesthetics.
This two-room apartment design was created for a young and enthusiastic homeowner who teaches art history at a university. Therefore the interior was shaped upon a concept of modern style that meets historical elements. In this dark interior concept, a modular sofa and an ottoman coffee table set introduce punchy green, salmon, and yellow interruptions.
Dark walls are cut with bright paint features that form an artistic background for statues and paintings of ancient Greek culture.
Mature indoor plants feather the edges of the room, where they merge into heavy green drapes.
One life-sized statue beside the TV has been given a modern paint treatment that incorporates it into the surroundings more effectively.
The rest of the TV wall offers no media storage but comes alive with a shapely salmon pink painted circle that contrasts against dark grey wall stucco.
A small vase of flowers brightens the coffee table with its all-white arrangement.
The lounge forms an open plan concept with the kitchen and dining area, which each offer a cohesive collection of contrasting colours and tones.
Behind the teal sofa, a small pedestal dining table is encircled by green upholstered dining chairs. A marble vase brings a few glossy green fronds to the dining table centrepiece.
The kitchen is a colour-blocked design, with coniferous green base and wall cabinets and a matching green countertop.
Under cabinet lighting reflects brightly against a reflective black backsplash. A marble utensil holder and serving stand place white accents against the dark background.
A copper kitchen tap warmly complements the dining room pendant light finish.
Inside the bedroom, the riot of colourful interruptions continues with more modern paint effects across a focal wall and a colour-treated greek statue.
The bedroom is divided by a green portiere behind the headboard. The curtain separates the sleeping zone from a home workspace and a dressing area with a custom-cut full-length mirror.
In the home office area, a custom-made green desk is contrasted by an eye-catching yellow desk chair. The workspace runs directly beneath the window and is flanked on either side by two open-fronted wardrobes. An LED desk lamp provides focussed task light to the study area when the sun goes down, and a potted plant delivers light decoration.
A small bedside table holds a vase of contrasting botanical plumes and a modern table lamp for reading.
Scatter cushions and bedclothes are layered to achieve a creatively colourful combination.
In our second featured home design, an electric blue sectional sofa strikes through a dark grey and black living space, creating a visual buzz.
An ornate ceiling rose emerges from a shadowy grey ceiling. Small, recessed spotlights dot across the grey stucco in trios to disperse pockets of illumination. Down below, a small side table and coffee tables echo its circular outline.
The living room floor lamp cuts a sharper silhouette over the sofa, replacing curves with a slimline angular form. Tall interior doors disappear into the grey walls, free from any framework, discernible only by modern back hardware.
The nesting coffee tables bear a unique and bold minimalist aesthetic that strongly competes with the strike of colour.
Surfaces in the room are clear from clutter, which evokes a sculptural feel.
The modular sofa itself looks like a piece of installation art.
The couch is arranged to face two directions in the living room. One faces toward the kitchen diner, whilst the other looks at a TV and wall-mounted media units. The wall-hung cabinets are black wood grain to darkly meld with the moody grey backdrop. A contrasting silver shelving unit catches the sunlight by the window.
Sheer white voiles keep the windows bright. Shallow radiators keep off the chill from the glass.
The fabulous blue light installation flares above a black dining table and six modern chairs.
A glass fruit bowl makes a light-reflective dining table centrepiece.
Behind the contemporary dining set, a modern kitchen works around the back of the living room in an L-shape.
A wall of floating black base units and metallic wall units run into a solid wall of appliance housing units.
An integrated black oven fits sleekly into the wall of black wood grain.
The silver wall units reflect natural light from the kitchen window in a modern linear installation.
The bright blue dining room pendant lights are the first thing the eye focuses on when rounding the corner into the black and grey kitchen diner space. Their bold presence makes a startling effect that builds intrigue and wonder.

Dark and mysterious with strong red interruptions, this modern home interior is an atmospheric space with a bold personality. Visualised by Andrey Vladimirov, this home design features an open plan living space that is encased in dramatic black decor from the ceiling down to the floor. Contemporary furniture and accent cushions throw in the ruby red accent, whilst reserved lighting features set a subtle moody glow. In the kitchen, a riot of red overcomes the cooking and prep space, spilling out onto colour-matched kitchen bar stools at the dining island. In the bedroom, red accents are minimised to create a restfully dark space when sleep comes easily.
We enter this dark design tour inside the main living space, where an open plan lounge area gathers around a modern linear fireplace design.
Cocooned in black decor, natural light from the large windows is quickly swallowed up inside the dark living space. Red scatter cushions and a pair of red accent chairs add a spark of vibrancy to the setup and an indoor plant adds a plume of lively greenery. An upholstered bench divides the lounge from the adjacent kitchen diner without fully obstructing the open flow.
The modern fireplace burns with fantastic brilliance within the black living room wall, where it merges smoothly into the stucco. Wall-mounted units display decorative items under the glow of LED backlights. A modern black living room floor lamp goes almost unnoticed beside the black sofa, where it provides focussed light when required.
Soft lighting highlights the detail in 3D relief art along the hallway.
Behind the lounge area, a black and red kitchen design features a long dining island that accommodates up to five people. A modern linear suspension light pulls along the full length of the island, distributing even illumination.
A glass vase filled with a sprig of greenery provides a fresh centrepiece for the kitchen dining island.
Two bright red kitchen bar stools interrupt a line of black counterparts, causing bold visual interest.
A couple of tumblers and a decorative tray fill the opposite end of the kitchen island.
The kitchen island is the first item you encounter upon entering the main living space that spans the back of the home. The long volume guides the eye towards floor-to-ceiling windows where there is a wide balcony and a sweeping panoramic view.
Behind the wall of red kitchen units, this dark grey dining room offers a more formal dining experience.
A linear planter is set inside of the partition wall between the kitchen and the dining room to provide an uplifting focal point.
A linear light drops a striking red accent above the dining table.
There is a second lounge area within the home, which is fashioned into the shape of a circle with two curved sofas.
A round rug holds the circular furniture arrangement together. A modern coffee table installs a circular core.
A black sideboard melds with the dark walls.
The stylish lamp on top of the sideboard is a Hoop LED table lamp by Adolini+Simonini Associati for Martinelli Luce.
An extraordinary pendant light descends upon the curvaceous lounge layout with mesmerising scale.
A set of backlit shelving units makes an accompanying glow at one side of the round lounge area.
Red artwork emerges from the shadows.
A low plinth displays figurines.
The figurines are Star Wars-themed Bearbrick collectables.
The wide-framed charcoal upholstered bed commands much of the bedroom space.
A long linear bedside unit extends from one side of the upholstered bed.
A black bedroom rug is offset to balance out the wide black bedside unit.
The floor reading lamp saves space on the second bedside table, which is a neat wraparound design.
An edge-to-edge wall of glass includes doors out onto the balcony.
An interior glass partition wall separates the bedroom sleeping area from a walk-in wardrobe.
The tinted glass wardrobe wall softens the visual effects of the clothing that hangs inside, whilst keeping the clothing collection a part of the overall bedroom visual.
The shower space design receives a red accent in the shape of a narrow toiletries shelf.
A red accent wall is matched by an attention-grabbing red toilet–and a matching red toilet roll!
The outside area of the home is smoothly floored in black composite decking, which works around white pebbled plant beds. Uniform rows of small trees grow a formal garden.
Just outside the door, a wooden bench is softened with plush red seat pads. The outdoor seat provides a perfectly situated viewing point to enjoy the garden and the peace of the environment.
A large outdoor sculpture adds a flash of modern style to the garden area.
The sculpture introduces another bold red accent to the deck.
From this decked area, a tall set of illuminated exterior stairs lead up to a parking space that proudly displays the homeowner’s prized motorbike and car – with red paintwork of course.

Dark, mysterious, and dreamy, this huge gallery of 51 dark bedroom design ideas is filled with interior inspiration, tips and accessories to help you design yours. We’ll explore a large cross-section of black and dark grey bedroom decor schemes that set a stylish stage in the deep shadows, across a selection of neoclassical, modern, baroque and industrial aesthetics. With that said, dark doesn’t necessarily mean colourless or neutral. We also bring a selection of darkly coloured decor schemes across the deep blue and green arena, along with some luxe golden accents. You’ll find inspiration for unique headboards, eye-catching feature walls, spectacular bedroom lighting, and showstopping bedroom furniture too.
Super-size it. This dark bedroom design not only goes bold on tone with a moody mural headboard wall but the bed gets scaled up with a super wide platform base. The combination achieves a luxurious aesthetic that oozes confidence.
Black opulence with a side of mood lighting. This textural black headboard wall is atmospherically lit by a ribbon of LED light, which subtly stripes around the edge of a deeply wood-clad window reveal.
Teal dreams. Take a walk on the dark side with a base of rich teal and muted aubergine accents to create a sumptuous sleep space. A gold wall light and matching floor lamp splice in bright lustre.
Turn up the texture. When opting for a dark backdrop, consider introducing deep texture to add interest. This fabulously 3D headboard feature wall makes a tactile statement, whilst a handmade bedroom pendant light drops rustic vibes over top.
Another unique bedroom statement wall, this time with large format tiles in a series of vertical and horizontal orientations that catch the light differently.
The illuminated headboard line. A shallow slab headboard can be brought to life with a recessed ribbon of LEDs to create an uplifting bedroom feature.
Black and white distinction. Turn contrast up to the max by pairing your black bedroom features with crisp white elements. Keep accessories simple to attain a striking minimalist effect.
In this high-contrast black and white design, a statement lighting installation loops a tangle of highlights above a casually styled upholstered bed. Intriguing black and white artwork lines the walls.
Light strip series. This dark bedroom design features a series lighting strips to accentuate and define. One provides safe passage across a split level floor, two draw along the edges of a custom cut bedside mirror, and the final beam is an eye-catching oblique installation that is as much decor as it is reading light.
Get ready for the light show. This colour-changing light installation is made more impressive by a textured backdrop that scatters the glow.
Matching motifs. Inside this dark brown and black bedroom design, a piece of bedroom wall decor is made to match a wooden storage unit at the side of the room. Behind one of the bedside cabinets, wall stripes are added to echo the striped nature of the veneer.
Decorative zoning. Headboard feature walls are regularly used to define the sleeping area, but how about installing a custom ceiling treatment to mark entry into an ensuite bathroom or a bedroom courtyard?
Open plan bathtub areas and glass wall ensuite bathrooms allow dark bedroom designs to feel more spacious, which combats the oppressive nature of dark tones.
Panel your perimeter. Elegant panel moulding is a golden ticket to creating an effective neoclassical bedroom design, which looks phenomenal under a silky matt black coating. Add in a stunning bedroom chandelier for ultimate splendour.
Black baroque. Is there anything more fitting for a black bedroom backdrop than the intricacies of baroque design?
Dark blue and balanced. Dark blue is brought out of the shadows in the modern bedroom treatment with vibrant sunshine yellow accent pieces.
This dark bedroom concept takes the ‘dark’ side a little literally with a sombre reminder of how many days of life there is left to live. Of course, nobody really knows how long they have on this rock, so always live for today!
Green says go. Black canvases make a strong anchor for brighter elements, like these fresh and energising green bed accents. A green desk chair adds zest to a cool home office area that’s fashioned behind the headboard too,
Whitewashed boards make a breezy feature across a grey bedroom, which stylishly amalgamates the bed with a bedroom workspace.
It’s all in the details. When decorating in dark colours, it’s fun to add just a couple of colourful accessories to shake up the visual, like these eye-catching tinted glass vases.
Paint with light. Use bedroom pendant lights to fashion form and colour against black bedroom walls. Think of your light fixtures as jewellery for your bedroom.

Slip through the cracks. Clever cutaways are illuminated with LED light to create a bedroom accent wall with artistic appeal. A black jute rug adds texture to the floor.

Cosy up a dark decor scheme with a soft and light textural rug and glass pendant lights.

Layers of luxury. A golden accent column, a designer wall light, and deeply textural stone cladding combine to achieve a show-stopping focal point.

Links of light. An impressive modern chandelier, chain link bedroom pendant lights, and an illuminated headboard shelf make a bright connection from top to bottom.
A dark wonderland. With vines covering soaring arches, this dark bedroom concept speaks of fairy tales and castles from long ago.
Slats and stone. Two trends make up this extraordinary feature wall, where slats of different length fashion a cityscape-like silhouette against a polished stone panel.
Geometric focal point. The recessed headboard shelf behind this 4 poster bed is picked out in an eyecatching geo print that makes busy contrast with the rest of the calm grey room.
Slatted ceiling lights. Brighten dark rafters with a series of bright strip lights between slatted beams.

Black, grey, and greige decor elements boldly fuse together in the design of these two strong home interiors, visualised by Eugene Shkilnyuk. These dark interiors communicate a luxurious aesthetic with drama building in each shade, shadow, and moody lighting scheme. Open living room layouts are styled with laconic precision, sharp silhouettes, and an undercurrent of deep sophistication. In home design number one, a double-height living room makes a grand first impression, from which a glossy black marble staircase climbs above razor-sharp lighting. Home design number two is a suave apartment scheme that puts a twist on traditional wainscotting with uniquely curvaceous feature wall panelling.
A large modular sofa arrangement draws through the centre of our first featured home design, laying a light greige core inside a dark grey and black setting.
The double sided sofa layout faces toward the TV on one side of the living room and a serene treetop view on the other.
The TV is secured within a glossy black mount, which attaches onto a striking stone feature wall. The stone focal wall is atmospherically lit to accentuate its deep texture. Uplights highlight the delicate foliage of two indoor plants nearby.
A plush living room rug lays plush texture beneath and around the modern sofa, creating an island of comfort and design interest.
The stone TV feature wall extends all the way up to the towering ceiling line of the double-height living room. Its LED perimeter lighting attracts the eye, calling attention to the spectacular dimensions of the space.
Huge slatted panels draw down the double-height void to create a light permeable room divider between the lounge and the dining room.
A small side table neatly wraps around the edge of the sofa to create a streamlined look.
Custom-made window drapes blend with the dark walls of the room and the black window frames.
Large format floor tiles further expand the sense of space in the impressive living room.
Black panels clad the ceiling, their dark colour causing the rafters to seem somewhat lower and the room to feel a little cosier. A smoked glass balustrade encloses the mezzanine landing and reflects the moon-like spherical pendants that descend through the void.
The dark ceiling treatment and large formal grey floor tiles continue through the lower, more enclosed hallway of the home to create a dramatic corridor of shadows.
Sculptural art appears out of the gloom, its angles and arches emphasised under the soft glow of sporadic mood lighting.
Just past the slatted room divider, dining room pendant lights match the moons above the neighbouring lounge. This they time appear even more dramatic by their proximity to a similarly sized dining table below.
The spherical pendant lights are complemented by a round dining table design and curvaceous modern dining chairs.
The midnight black dining chairs merge with the shadowy grey and black backdrop, coming alive only in moments of stolen light.
A spacious kitchen design unfolds nearby, with a large dining island placed at its heart.
A cantilevered shelf extends around two sides of the kitchen island to form a breakfast bar.
The kitchen sink and hob are situated at the back of the room, sandwiched between a bank of base and wall units with a cool industrial style finish.
A luxe black marble staircase design ascends to the upper floor of the home, with bright LED strip lights sharply defining every tread.
Another LED strip cuts down a custom-cut mirror in the home entryway, where it beams light onto a convenient dressing area by the front door.
This suave apartment design features an uber-soft tufted sofa as its hero piece.
The modular couch locks around a modern sofa table, whilst a smaller side table tightly hugs the arm rest.
Behind the sofa, the open layout flows into the kitchen and dining space.
In front of the couch, a sleek TV wall unfolds with a glossy black mount and rich walnut wall panelling.
A light rug gently brightens the room and adds a cosy touch.
Grey scatter cushions plump up the modern sofa design.
An indoor tree grows an explosion of texture and greenery into the restrained scheme.
The kitchen island is combined with a lower dining table design, where four unique dining stools sit at a comfortable height.
A modern chandelier twists and turns above the full length of the kitchen island and dining table to further unite the combined concept.
Candles and decorative bowls make a modern dining table centrepiece.
Large windows bring natural light into the dark kitchen.
The stone effect island complements a stone backsplash at the back of the room.
In the hallway, walnut wall panelling follows the same aesthetic as the TV wall in the lounge to achieve a cohesive flow.
A huge mirror creates an optical illusion of added space in the home entryway.
This interior design puts a new twist on traditional wainscotting with uniquely curvaceous feature wall panelling.

Without the right lighting, accents, and strong silhouettes, dark interior design can be dull or just downright depressing. With thoughtful accents, a dark decor scheme is mysterious, exciting, and deep. Thoughtful lighting puts focus on feature points in the room, creating glowing vistas of style and wonder. To illustrate, we’re featuring inspirational home interiors that offer two contrasting alternatives to setting up a deliciously dark decor scheme. Home design number one is a saturation of ebony black with luxurious introductions of mood lighting where you’d least expect it. Our second tour takes us to a smaller abode, where the decor is lightened slightly to a charcoal and graphite combination that builds a cosy cocoon.
In our first inspirational example of modern dark interior design, a large modular sofa arrangement forms an island of deep comfort at the centre of the shadows.
One side of the sectional sofa composition is faced towards a projector screen, which lights up an entire wall when in use.
The dark, projector-friendly living room gives an authentic cinema experience with low-level lighting and a hushed atmosphere. Light strips thinly thread around the edges of the room and up a small staircase to guide safe footfall.
A unique lounge chair stands opposite the sofa to round out the furniture arrangement. Its designer form is highlighted under the glow of the projector screen; a prominent shadow is cast at the foot of the neat chair, which enlarges its presence in the spacious room.
In front of the modular sofa, a modern coffee table has book storage in its base. Part of its surface is finished in white marble, which highlights the piece within the moody black surroundings.
A modern fireplace is unusually situated at the side of the room, where it blazes beneath an eye-catching lightbox feature. A unique floor lamp carries light into a dark corner nearby.
Small table lamps dot the black decor scheme with brief moments of illumination.
Intense dashes of light fall upon black wood grain panels to form an illuminated feature wall. The attention-grabbing installation aptly balances out the glow of the fireplace opposite.
A side table slots conveniently into the modular sofa arrangement.
In contrast to the rest of the shadowed interior, glass blocks bring glorious natural daylight flooding onto a modern staircase design. Black treads appear to float weightlessly up to the second floor.
A glass wall separates the living room from a chic tea room design.
Inside the tea room, a solidly backlit wall presents a pristine collection of tea paraphernalia.
In the kitchen, a white island countertop lies brightly in the black scheme beneath focussed spotlights. Brown dining chairs add notes of welcoming warmth.
In our second dark interior concept, the sectional sofa divides the lounge from an open plan kitchen dining space.
Behind the grey sofa, a bright red smeg fridge makes a boldly colourful statement under the kitchen island.
The bright flames of a modern fireplace are moodily contrasted by a luxe grey marble hearth.
A small side table slides tidily up alongside the grey couch, where a mature indoor plant adds height, texture, and colour relief.
Grey drapes pool onto the dark herringbone floor.
A large area rug lays a lighter tone against the rich floor treatment.
Underneath the island, the kitchen floor treatment stands out in a lighter tone than the rest of the room to create clear zoning.
Black kitchen units form a commending frame around a dark marble backsplash and countertop.
Integrated appliances and black accessories meld into the shadowy kitchen design.
LED strips crisply call attention to open kitchen shelving.
The dining table extension is executed in a wood effect finish, which is complemented by the living room flooring.
A modern fruit bowl makes a simple and functional table centrepiece.
The grey granite tile that underlines the kitchen area is repeated in the home entryway to segregate the open space.
A backlit full-length mirror lightens the small entryway.
A plush entryway bench sits in front of the mirror to fashion a dressing area opposite a row of built-in coat closets.
The bedroom is a cocoon of charcoal grey upholstery, grey stone, and dark wood grain.
The shadowy scheme is thoughtfully lit with low mood lighting to promote rest and good sleep.
A linear pendant light and a rotatable wall sconce provide reading light.
A grey bed and matching bed set melt away into the dark bedroom decor.
Recessed LED strips highlight the perimeter of the grey bathroom design. A black wall-hung toilet casts a disconnected shadow that emphasises its floating effect.
Instead of bathroom vanity lights, an additional ribbon of LED glow is emitted below the large vanity mirror to fall upon the bathroom sink and countertop.
The atmospheric lighting scheme continues inside of the walk-in shower area too, where matt black shower fixtures sink into the shadows. A black-framed, smoked-glass shower screen perfectly complements the dark aesthetic.
