These 51 fabulous landscape design ideas will make you want to live your life outdoors, during work, rest, play, and every meal time in between. Don’t be intimidated by the size of some of these great gardens, even when scaled down these combinations produce a superb effect that is sure to delight and impress. We’ll tour through tiered garden spaces with layered green panoramas, paved exteriors with green interludes, pristine box hedge borders, elegant garden water features, and tree-lined landscapes that look plucked from a storybook. Whether you’re carving out an outdoor entertaining space for guests or a secret hideaway from the world, there is inspiration here for all.
A pathway to heaven. Build up lush borders around a wide pathway that guides the eye to a green panorama of perfectly aligned mature trees and neat shrubs.
Be artistic with your patio. Patios don’t have to be a series of uniform paving slabs. By employing a combination of paving options you can create something far more unique and interesting.
Textural evergreens. These shapely plant beds are jam-packed with contrasting textural evergreen perennials to create a tactile border around the patio. A combination of grasses and creeping groundcover has a surprisingly impactful effect.
Squared up. Simple squares create a highly formal landscape layout, which can be achieved with low boxwood hedges. Place more delicate plants at the centre of your square plant beds, or make a focal point with an attractive pool and fountain.
This squared landscape design preserves topiaried boxes of solid hedge to achieve an even one-level look.
Superior symmetry. This luxury garden landscape layout achieves its high-end look with a perfectly symmetrical arrangement of mirror image garden steps and tree rows.
Peaceful conversation pit. Dipped low into the patio, this outdoor conversation pit goes almost unnoticed if not for its fabulous modern waterfall feature.
The patterned patio. Small linear plant beds and tonal patio slabs interrupt this large courtyard to create a captivating pattern between small trees. In autumn, the focus switches from the purple flower beds to the treetops, which blaze bright flame orange.
Sculptural beauty. Topiary provides green, sculptural beauty in a garden, but you can also incorporate man-made creations as an outdoor focal point too. This wall-mounted sculpture is combined with atmospheric exterior lighting for impact after dark too.
This dynamic garden statue inspires a landscape filled with motion. Water fountains bubble from the paved terrace and a vertical garden wall creates a visual cascade.
Take a walk on the wild side. Let loose in your landscape layout with meandering pathways that scoop loosely around wild planting arrangements and majestic trees.
Start a riot of colour. Jacaranda trees are a sub-tropical tree native to South America that burst with vibrant, long-lasting violet flowers. As the petals fall like confetti, a purple carpet forms beneath.
Equally pretty but with a delicate white star-shaped spring flowers, a Juneberry tree is a hardy option that grows well in most positions, including damp landscapes and under light shade.
In this courtyard design, the Juneberry tree creates a stunning canopy over an outdoor dining room.
Eat al fresco in a jungle of greenery. This modern outdoor dining table is situated in a spot that is completely enveloped with climbing plants and tropical shrubs to create a 360º jungle view.
Sweeping beds of colour. Make a garden pathway into a curving journey of delight through borders of colourful shrubs in contrasting sizes and textures. This loose approach makes a great contrast against sharp linear architecture.
Fill in the gaps. A groundcover of Mind-your-own-business perennials will quickly fill in the gaps between stepping stones to achieve a well-established look. Add planters of varying heights to bring greenery to terraces.
On the straight and narrow. A narrow pathway along the perimeter of the household provides an easy tour of the garden. Plant beds and a water feature are set perpendicular to the path to form avenues of beauty.
Carve out a moment of zen with a minimalist deck, serene focal point, and a comfortable modern outdoor chair.
Multistory planting. Incorporate rooftops and overhanging balconies to bring more greenery into your garden or courtyard. A multilevel planting scheme grows a calming feeling complete seclusion and safety.
Pond perfection. This precise circular pond with fountains, a built-in plant bed, and an encircling pathway is a sizeable design that can be effectively scaled down to suit smaller environments.
Streamline your design with built-in benches. In a minimalist modern landscape design, a laconic materials palette is key. To maintain the simplicity, forego freestanding seating in favour of custom cast concrete alternatives.
Make an abstract compilation. A lush green lawn, a paved patio area, and a pond filled with monolithic forms come together in an abstract, angular formation. The elements are both defined and held together by a clean concrete border.
Create a water world. Each section of this unique garden appears as a floating platform due to fully flooded borders. Linear pathways provide passage over and around the ponds.
Fashion a garden that ruffles in the wind with soft Mountain Sedge, and Big Bluestem from the Great Plains and grassland regions of central & eastern North America.
Lush lawns with sharp edges. A healthy green lawn is a beauty to behold on its own but becomes more of a jewel with a clear cut paved border.
Geometric climbs. A table and modern outdoor chairs are positioned casually at the base of a spectacular geometric hillside garden in this unique landscape design. A channel of water draws the eye to the focal centre of the climb.
Build outdoor rooms. Bespoke box benches construct walls of utility and separation.
A colour changing cube. Encase courtyard walls in copper that will change from brown to blue and green as it ages.
Evoke traditional Japanese serenity with ornamental stones, a pebbled bed, and a stone water basin.
Slices of nature. Whether you’re planning a pond or raised plant beds, these chamfered volumes splinter from one central mass to make a cool combination.
Make gardening a game with a cacti chess set.
Set your landscape overflowing with life and colour with a hardy Creeping Jenny perennial. Its leaf colour depends on sun exposure, appearing chartreuse in shade and golden in full sun.
Clean-cut and calm. Tame nature within smooth, polished perimeters. Add exterior uplights to underscore plant textures.
Full and flourishing. An abundance of mixed groundcover and perennials around rugged rocks fashion a thriving primeval quality.
Stepped terraces. Combine exterior staircases with staggered terraces to ascend a layer cake of lush greenery.
Another stepped landscape design, but this time with battlement-shaped planters.
A raft of greenery. Set inside a pond, this platform of planting makes a raft-like landscape.
Look into the future with futuristic pod-like planters and pixelated sculpture.
Conquer challenging plot shapes. This tight, triangular shaped garden presents landscaping layout challenges. In answer to the conundrum, one wall of the building has been incorporated into the pool as a water feature. A bamboo border draws attention to the abundance of height instead of the lack of square footage.
Simple squares of paving slabs crisply accommodate an outdoor kitchen and a patio dining room.
Just part of the landscape. This cosy fireside lounge looks as though it’s been there forever thanks to the introduction of creeping ivy around the outdoor fireplace.
Construct a poolside planter with dual function. Not only a home for plants but a water feature too, this rustic stone-walled planter makes an ornamental backdrop for a small swimming pool.
Concrete and commanding, this unique pool design and industrial backdrop add monolithic majesty to the green landscape.
Trimmed trees. Trees are always stunning in their most wild and natural form but another approach is to cultivate sculpted canopies with topiaried boxwood bases.
The beauty of blank space. Developed in Japan in the late Kamakura period, karesansui gardens are built upon the principal of yohaku-no-bi, meaning the beauty of blank space. In this example, blank borders of raked sand draw attention to enchanting mounded groundcover and fiery red shrubs.
Dip into a deck to make warm memories around a firepit.
Form a corridor of colour with boldly contrasting grasses.
This cosy firepit design is bedded down in a sandy base to evoke beach vacation vibes.
Speaking of vacations, palm trees and hammocks have five star tropical hangout vibes written all over them.
Sculpt fabulous borders. Margarinata American Aloe and the wide-leaved Red Poker Aloe build engaging definition around a raised terrace. An Organ Pipe Cactus creates towering height.

Flowing Garden House is a large, luxury family compound, built for two entrepreneur brothers in the city of Zhangzhou, China. Created by architectural firm More Than Arch Studio, the 1700 square metre home stands apart from the majority of modern houses in China. This home is composed of three parts, which include a private unit for each brother’s family and a communal space for family gatherings, fitness and more. The social spaces centre around a peaceful courtyard design with a huge pond and majestic trees. The hope for this unique home design is that it will become a hub for extended family, and be the home fire that forges memories for generations to come.
It is a huge pond design that gives this home a feeling of close family connection. The central pond courtyard kindles a blanketing sense of serenity that flows into each branch of the house.
At night, the courtyard is a warm and welcoming space under soft exterior lighting. Focussed LED spotlights dance across the stone steps that lead down to the pond to create a pretty, tiered effect and promote safety in low light.
The concrete steps around the pond serve as a place to sit and contemplate by the waters edge.
The modern steps descend into the water, building an abstract design under the clear surface.
LED strips follow the wider edge of the pond, achieving a bold, contemporary look.
Mature trees thrive around the perimeter of the courtyard, creating height, texture, and natural beauty.
A traditional Chinese tea room opens up fully to the calming courtyard view. Tea drinking is elemental in Southern Fujian, as well as an integral part of hospitality.
With bi-fold doors drawn back, the tea room design is extended by a narrow terrace that leads to the water’s edge.
An indoor heated pool is placed in the basement, with lounge areas and meeting places situated alongside it.
A sunken courtyard blesses the basement areas with natural light and a beautiful natural panorama.
The material palette throughout the home compound remains consistent in warm wood grain and board-formed concrete. The palette is softened slightly in the two private residential volumes to create a comfortable vibe, where raw concrete walls are minimised by beige stucco.
In the larger, more open social spaces, cool, textural concrete rules with little additional decoration. Bamboo ceilings create a warm counterbalance.
Interior lighting is focussed and atmospheric.
A huge skylight brings sunlight to the basement swimming pool.
Fair-faced concrete and open walkways build a monumental aesthetic through the home compound.
The residential units that belong to each brother and their family are merged into one building but are entirely separate inside. They are entered via two independent, staggered entrance halls from a ribbon courtyard to establish privacy.
The combined home is equipped with a grand dining room, which is granted the best views of the internal courtyard design. The grand dining room is furnished with two round dining tables that can seat up to ten people each, to contend with a large number of family members and guests during the festivals. A smaller courtyard backs the dining room to create an open flow.
Fireplaces create a heartwarming glow, serving as an attraction for cosy gatherings.
The scale of respective spaces are distinct from each other to conjure contrasting moods.
The ribbon courtyard links all areas, threading an outdoor tour.
From stone steps at the northeast entrance, under shaded eaves, and through a series of narrow and wider spatial arrangements, the courtyard pathway is a private trail of tranquillity.
Via the south side of the building, a lower corridor reaches the terrace where the whole view fully unfolds.
For many years, the use of courtyards has been commonplace in local houses to improve environmental conditions and accomplish natural division between private and communal spaces.
Plants that flourish over time become earthed in family memories and in future generations.
Light wells touch each interior space with a hint of nature.
Porthole windows align to allow line of sight to pass through from one space to the next.
Guest bedrooms are arranged above the north side of the leisure zone.
Room sizes are compact and cosy, with serene garden views to the south.
Bedrooms are given an outdoor connection with a small courtyard.
Both of the master bedrooms are situated upon the south facing side of the second floor, which is faced toward woodland that leads to the sea.
Other than some land to the south, where the sea is narrowly observable through the trees, there are no remarkable views to be had, since the height of the building is restricted to just ten metres. This makes the courtyard and landscaped pathways all the more precious.
The 30-metre-wide dense forest belt serves as a windbreak and shield from typhoons. The 3-acre, rectangular residential plot has its shorter sides at the north and south. Neighbouring buildings stand to the east and west.
The entrance is on the north side of the road, which meanders into the social leisure space. The south of the home compound is the private residential area. The division of the two independent residential units fluidly forms the ribbon courtyard.
Just off the northernmost corridor, multi-function rooms within the two units can be used as a casual dining room, for arts, as a reading room, or for games.
The basement is equipped with a living room, home theatre, a snug, a laundry room, and spare bedrooms.

Replacing one existing house and a warehouse, this large family home was made to complement the tropical lifestyle of Kerala, India. Created by The Design Room, the architecture sympathetically retains the native trees of the 600 square metre site, and encloses several of them within a central courtyard design. The built spaces branch out from this open-air heart of the home, which achieves a cosy connection. The open plan layout was guided by the humid climatic conditions of the region. The benefits of cross ventilation, passive cooling, and natural lighting satisfied the vision for an energy-efficient home. Outside, the vegetation contrasts vibrantly with the visual heat of iron-rich red laterite stone.
The attractive three-story house structure has a crisp modern facade of contrasting red stone and clean white render. Established plants bristle around the edges of the plot, growing lush borders. Built-in planters draw a splash of natural greenery up by the front entrance door, and onto the first-floor terrace of the home.
Paving stones interrupt the green groundcover, laying a welcoming chequered driveway. Low metal gates smartly front the property, whilst white rendered walls separate the residence from its close neighbours.
Overhangs above the windows and terraces keep the interior and exterior living spaces cool and shady. Parasol roofs were implemented into the home design to support passive cooling of the interiors. These appealing roof structures also successfully conceal solar panels installed upon them.
The materials for the build were carefully selected for their local availability and their thermal effects. Laterite, an iron-rich soil and a rock type formed in tropical areas, was used extensively in the build. Historically used in monument-building, this time laterite bricks from Kannur are precisely used as a substitute for exterior cladding.
A minimalistic interior design complements the airy openness of the floor plan. Wood furniture and window frames complement the natural greenery both inside and outside of the home. The soft upholstery is light and creamy to adhere to a peaceful palette of polished white floors and white painted walls. The design shows detailed attention to the effective circulation of air throughout the house, employing slatted partitions and open bookcases to create lightweight zoning.
A double-height void makes for an impressive dining room. The modern dining set is a rich wood tone that coordinates warmly with the architectural details of the home. Double doors connect the interior dining space with the main courtyard.
A small courtyard design thrives beneath a slatted skylight, where it blurs the boundaries between inside and out. A huge glass window presents the pretty view to the living space and stairwell, whilst glass doors lead to the dining room.
There is a modern vanity unit with a bathroom sink inside the courtyard, where the family can wash their hands before dinner. A round wall mirror makes an elegant decorative feature.
The staircase design features open risers, allowing the view of the courtyard and natural light to flood in without obstruction. A comfortable sitting area makes the most of the pleasant vista.
The cream, white, and wood minimalist decor scheme continues inside the tranquil bedrooms. In the master bedroom suite, three wooden shutters create a tropical-style headboard feature behind the wood platform bed. Made-to-measure wood wardrobes span the entire length of the large room toward a matching bookcase.
False walls with decorative perforations are included on the west and south sides of the home to achieve cooler interior spaces. The decorative screens create beautiful light play across the open interior.
Comfortable sitting spaces dot the home, fashioned by modern lounge chairs and an ottoman or two. The sitting areas offer a quiet moment of solitude from the family for a spot of reading or peaceful contemplation.
As well as the already established plant life on the plot, an additional plant array was selected to harmonise with local growing conditions and the clients preferred aesthetic.
A carport shades vehicles from the hot sun during the day. Exterior lights brightly illuminate the driveway, balconies and terraces by night.
The first-floor terrace overlooks the central courtyard down at ground level, creating a family-friendly flowing connection across the vertical plane.
The sun-dappled courtyard features round decked areas that interconnect with circular plant beds. The plant beds are dotted around to house enormous trees that were already established on the site when it was purchased. In fact, the idea for the large courtyard sprung specifically from the notion of wanting to protect the numerous adult trees at the core of the plot.
The site is located just one kilometre from Kollam beach.
Side elevation, showing cladding organisation and fenestration.
Ground floor plan with courtyard, formal living room, family lounge, dining room, kitchen and butler kitchen, master bedroom suite, and a double bedroom that is used as a grandparents room.
First-floor plan with large terrace, spacious upper living room, home gym, and two additional bedrooms for the children.
The open flow of the home layout encourages many interactions between family members, as well as time spent outside in nature and fresh air. These interactions with family and nature help greatly with mental wellbeing, whilst the home gym will assist in the pursuit to keep the body healthy.
In this illustrated diagram, we observe the solar and airflow aspects of the home and its successful energy-efficient design solutions.

A slow-paced, nature-kissed serenity trickles through this modern Indian house design, which was created by the talent at architectural firm Studio Era. From the outside, the modern home is trimmed with mature palm trees and established plant beds, which frame the fresh white render of asymmetrical architecture. Inside the house, a bold staircase design dominates a wide entryway that leads into open and airy living rooms. The simple but stylish living spaces pause at light-filled courtyards that provide a blissful through-breeze. One sun-dappled courtyard features a beautiful koi fish pond that supplies animated colour, life and restful entertainment to family members of every age.

As we approach our featured home from the main street, White rendered boundary walls complement the crisp white render of sharp asymmetrical architecture, which cuts into the clear blue sky. Mature palm trees soften the sloping silhouette of the house before the gradient of the roof guides the eye down into established plant beds.
The modern facade glows warmly at night, as exterior lights illuminate the porch and indoor pendants twinkle from within a light-permeable second story wall.
Stone paving slabs clad the driveway and entryway of the contemporary Indian home, clearing the path for visitors. An architectural overhang provides plentiful shade over the front door.
Above the front entrance, a covered balcony offers a cool and shady spot in which to hang out, read, or chat.
As we enter the high-end home, we’re greeted with a wide open entryway. A dominating modern staircase design climbs to the upper floor with open wooden treads and a bold solid black balustrade.
Open doorways lead off the wide entryway into the lounge and a separate dining space. A water-filled courtyard installs a peaceful pause between the living areas and encourages a blissful through breeze to cool the inner rooms.
Delicate water lilies grow at the heart of the koi pond, whilst the lively koi fish flick vivid orange colour as they wind around the bubbling borders.
Lush green plants flourish around the edges of the colourful koi fish pond, where they reach up through the sun-dappled space toward the heavens.
The life-filled pond creates a dreamy view from the lounge and the formal dining room alike.
The decor inside of the dining room is simple and minimalistic, light and understated, so as not to detract from the neighbouring koi pond. A contemporary wood tone and matt black buffet spans a cool board formed concrete wall. Two modern dining room pendant lights drop satin silver accents over the modern dining set.
Above the buffet unit, a trio of botanical wall art prints complement the beauty of the attached courtyards. A soft grey rug warms the tile dining room floor.
The dining room is sandwiched between two courtyards, which spill natural light onto the white upholstered dining chairs. The hue of the light changes as the sun goes down, which magically morphs the dining room colour scheme.
The calming koi fish pond entertains family members of all ages, from the very small and curious to the older and contemplative.
The koi pond also makes the most wonderful and tranquil addition to bedroom spaces. Here, a stylish bedroom chair pulls up to the patio doors to appreciate the special view. Floral bed covers tie in with the connection to nature, along with a natural wood headboard design and a vase of greenery. A small bedside table lamp emits a warming and restful glow.
The dry courtyard design supplies other rooms and walkways with a burst of natural greenery, a breath of fresh ventilation, and a splash of natural daylight. Glass walls on each floor of the home ensure that the uplifting courtyard view is spread tall and wide.
A small garden area has been planted upstairs so that every room in the home gets to benefit from a tangible connection with the outdoors. A relaxing swing seat offers an inviting spot to take in the vista and while away the hours. An outdoor chair and table are set up within touching distance of the plants for a more enveloping garden moment.
An eclectic furniture mix styles the lounge spaces.
Eye-catching wooden lounge chairs are paired by an air-permeable wall. A blue planter draws colour inspiration from the cloudless sky.
The upper landing is edged with clear glass balustrades, which leave the flow of natural light unobstructed.
A covered balcony welcomes the family into the fresh air.
A unique concrete bench curves the perimeter of the balcony.
A slatted ceiling filters the strong sunlight to provide comfortable shade. Outdoor planters bring a piece of the garden to the upstairs sitting area.
Board formed concrete contours the side of the contemporary Indian home exterior.
Each room is designed to benefit from the natural breeze and gentle shade.
Ground floor plan and first floor plan.
The section drawing clearly illustrates the positioning of the dining room between the two courtyard designs.
Living space design, including the lounge space, dining room, and beautiful courtyard with koi pond. We also see the covered balcony up top, which is affectionately and aptly named the Sunset Garden.
The project is entitled The Wall of Being, and it is behind this wall of being that life for the family unfolds in complete privacy and calm.

Nature has revitalising effects that are great for mental health but often we’re pretty removed from it in our modern homes. In built-up areas, there can be restricted space for gardens, or they may not offer enough privacy from the next-door neighbours. Courtyards offer an opportunity to put this right. Surrounded by the home itself, there are no prying eyes from next door, and the central location of the green space encourages footfall through it when moving from one interior room to the next. Designed by Kaizen Archi, these two bright and modern Vietnamese villa concepts are centred around their airy courtyards that provide blissfully cooling ventilation and a serene 360º garden view.
Measuring 26 metres by 30 metres, our first Vietnamese villa design is a modern abode that’s surrounded by a lush garden border of mature shrubs and palm trees.
The two-story house is arranged in a square formation, with a courtyard slotted inside.
The modern facade is shielded by high walls to ensure privacy from the road that runs close by the front entryway.
Once inside the villa, the aesthetic remains crisp and modern with fresh white walls, ceilings and floors. Natural wood elements and beige textiles warm the colour palette, and solid black accents provide weighty visual anchors.
The large and airy living space is an open layout that encompasses the kitchen and dining areas behind the lounge.
Retractable glass doors adjoin the living room with the outside terrace, which further increases the useable space. The indoor-outdoor living arrangement also ensures plenty of cooling airflow throughout the Vietnamese villa.
The kitchen installation fills the back of the living room with rich wooden cabinets. Matching wood effect panels reach all the way up to the ceiling line to extend the aesthetic and make a much grander statement. A coordinating kitchen island separates the cooking space from the dining area and neighbouring lounge.
The living room spills out into a peaceful courtyard design with mature trees and a deck for dining on in the fresh air.
Wide windows create sunkissed bedrooms with beautiful views of the green borders. An end of bed bench matches the earthy brown upholstered bed, whilst two lounge chairs tie in with the cool grey bed set and concrete headboard wall.
A floor lamp makes the bedroom seating area into a practical reading nook.
Inside the master suite, a low dividing wall separates the sleep space from a dressing table area.
An espresso bed throw perfectly coordinates with the deep shade of the headboard wall. A private terrace awaits just outside of sliding glass doors, with a calming view of the tropical treetops.
The bathroom has a fabulous view all of its own, which can be enjoyed from the bathtub.
Two outdoor chairs and an inviting hanging chair find shade under a short roof overhang and a number of small trees in raised planters.
At the side of the house, a narrow patio area runs alongside the high perimeter wall, which is softened by overhanging plants and border of thick greenery.
Home layout.
Our second Vietnamese villa design measures 7.5 metres by 30 metres in Binh Duong,
High walls and wooden canopies box in the private, two-story villa.
Behind the perimeter wall, the front entrance porch serves as a shaded outdoor sitting area.
A round coffee table creates a dark core for the lounge layout, and adds a balancing element for the large black TV screen.
Sliding glass doors connect the lounge with an airy courtyard, which then carries through to the kitchen diner. A large, glass dining room chandelier catches the light from double height windows.
Grey kitchen bar stools cooley match with the grey upholstered dining chairs, whilst the kitchen cabinets bring warm wood tone to the room scheme.
The cognac colourway reappears in an upholstered bed design in the master suite.
A beige bedroom rug melds easily with the wood chevron floor.
Modern bedroom pendant lights are suspended on either side of the bed, where they complement the metallic finish of two luxe bedside units.
A pair of bathroom mirrors hang from the ceiling of the vanity area, where LED perimeter lights cast a cosy glow.
Sky blue kids’ wardrobes are built-in at the end of the bed, where they attach to a kids’ workspace.
In the home office, hot orange accents add energy to a black, white and wood grain decor scheme. A designer chair makes a chic reading nook between two bookcases.
