Calming white, pale grey, and soothing wood tone decor instils a sense of peace into these two Asian-inspired home designs. Wooden storage furniture is crafted around the perimeter of the interior to include decorative lattice sections, which give a stylistic nod to shoji screens. Rattan accents and wooden furniture pieces span both traditional and modern aesthetics that make a gentle tonal accompaniment for the natural timber elements. Each apartment design creates a spacious and welcoming abode with a minimalist yet warm approach. Lighting is soft and relaxing to ensure that nothing in the home is jarring nor dominant, so that everything flows in a serene balance.
In home design number one, the Asian influence is present from the get-go with a shoji-screen-inspired storage wall that stands as a focal point behind the living room couch.
The living room is a large and spacious design with a warm and welcoming appeal. The built-in wooden storage cabinets that trim the perimeter of the living room spread visual warmth and natural beauty.
A rustic coffee table brings the warm wood tone accent to the centre of the lounge layout. A clean white tufted sofa wraps around the wooden coffee table in an inviting L-shape that promotes interaction and conversation.
A large area rug holds the lounge furniture layout together on one light and textural island.
Intriguing ornaments, a collection of coffee table books, and a wooden fruit bowl attractively adorn the wooden coffee table with equally earthy tones.
A cushioned lounge chair rounds out the lounge furniture arrangement. Its white upholstery uniformly matches the modular sofa design and tones with the jute rug.
Opposite the tufted sofa, a large wooden media unit is recessed into the wall stucco. In contrast to the rest of the living room, the wall stucco in this area is tinted a soft shade of brown to create a warm focal point. Bookshelves flank each side of the wall-mounted TV to create an attractive border and visual balance.
The wall of wooden storage that draws around the back of the living room in an L-shape is actually the kitchen. Much of the kitchen is concealed behind flat-fronted wooden panels, leaving just the kitchen sink area open for immediate access.
A line of storage cupboards underlines the TV unit, providing neat hideaways for DVDs, gaming devices, and remote controls.
A tall living room floor lamp stands like an elegant paper lantern over in the corner of the room, where it gently chases away the shadows at dusk.
The rest of the lounge area is illuminated by directional track lights, which cut a thin black line across the ceiling. The edge-to-edge, floor-to-ceiling window is dressed with a translucent covering that allows natural daylight to filter into the living room whilst still providing a sense of privacy.
Recessed perimeter lights emit a pleasant glow around the edges of the living room, which allows the homeowners to create different atmospheric settings within their lighting plan. More books stack between the two lounge chairs in this book lovers’ living room.
An open doorway leads off the living room into the home entryway so that natural light may be shared between the lounge and the hallway. A built-in bench gives the homeowners somewhere to sit whilst putting on shoes.
Wood panelling matches the concealed kitchen to create an even run of wood tone across the living room entry.
A home workspace tucks tidily behind the sofa.
Wood flooring spans the entire open plan living space to maintain cohesivity, whilst the flooring in the hallway switches to a hard-wearing grey surface.
A rustic side table is teamed with decorative bowls and a small floor lamp to fashion an attractive vignette.
A side table fashioned from wooden crates accompanies the desk area, providing a home for more books and an indoor plant.
The desk is accessorised with a traditional table lamp.
Rattan doors conceal a stock of office supplies.
The second of our two featured home designs is an equally inviting residence, wrapped in natural wood tone cabinets.
A stem light draws attention to a plinth by the window.
In the centre of the lounge, a round coffee table sets down a wooden core. A modular gray sofa is arranged in a double-sided formation.
One side of the sofa looks upon an open bookcase and a bank of floating wooden cabinets to create a restful reading nook.
The opposite side of the sofa faces toward a drop-down projector screen.
The screen falls in front of a gallery wall, which gives the space an attractive focal point when the screen is retracted.
A light area rug gives the sofa area a soft anchor.
The living room draws around in an L-shape to adjoin the kitchen diner. A breakfast bar is crafted around a structural support column to create a positive out of a potential negative layout issue. Two wooden bar stools pull up alongside.
Three elegant pendant lights draw along the length of the bar. See more ideas for island lighting.
Behind the support column, the kitchen island is amalgamated with the dining table.
The master bedroom is a minimalist space with a bespoke wooden headboard design.
Slatted detailing gives the headboard a modern twist.
A small bedroom pendant light hangs above a floating bedside unit that appears to extrude from the wooden headboard.
Two facing walls of wardrobes create a dressing area.
A dressing table island makes good use of the wide space.

On a peaceful plain by the foothills of Annamese Cordillera, central Vietnam, Hue people hold the role of family in high regard, placing family connections above all else. These values are what led one family of adult children to commission a home design in which their ageing parents could enjoy a retirement of relaxing pastimes and gardening. Designed by architectural firm Limdim House Studio, this 75 square metre home was designed to be easy to live in for the elderly couple, with a cosy yet minimalist aesthetic. Traditional, rustic elements were employed to achieve a restful appeal that is reminiscent of childhood in the countryside. An open plan interior promotes natural light and ventilation.
Although Hue is one of the biggest cities in Vietnam, the lifestyle is very peaceful. This calm spirit is conveyed in a traditional home exterior where rustic stone walls attractively encase a welcoming courtyard. Local to Hue city, an ancient style of plain clay roof tiles, called “Liệt” tiles, give the home exterior its traditional crowning. A modest fenestration of glass louvre windows interrupts a warm, sandy-coloured render.
Plant beds at either side of the gated entrance lay out a green welcome into the front courtyard. Within the gates, two outdoor chairs and a small coffee table sit out on the sun-dappled tile. Directly behind the outdoor sitting area, a large window draws connection with the interior space.
Double doors give entry into the home via a stepped concrete threshold. Small planters decorate one side of the wide front entrance, whilst a novelty head-shaped planter looks upon the other.
Inside the home, a minimalist layout was planned as the most convenient, low maintenance solution for the elderly couple. The sitting room features a custom-built sofa design with storage tucked subtly underneath its concrete base. A low lounge chair and coffee table make up the rest of the small sitting area, where a glass vase provides a simple centrepiece.
The concrete sofa base also forms the foot of a modern staircase design, where black metal balustrades form a striking pattern. On the 100m2 site, just 50m2 was used in the footprint of the home. The remainder of the plot was left available for growing vegetables and flowers, and enjoying a tranquil lifestyle.
The home is used almost exclusively by the retired couple, and so the compact living space is concise and functional for two. The kitchen island is a multifunctional piece that’s used to prepare food, to cook on the hob, and to dine, which frees up floor space for other items and activities.
The house interior is light-filled with a rustic indoor-outdoor appeal. A great stone feature wall climbs the double-height living space, creating natural tonal beauty that invites the eye to wander up to lofty heights.
A few wooden bar stools line up along the front of the concrete kitchen island, whilst wood louvre cabinets build a panel of rich wood tone across the back of the open concept living room. The door to the left of the kitchen leads to a guest room, whilst the other enters a powder room.
A full wall of louvre windows in the double-height void ventilates the home. A wooden ceiling fan aids air circulation.
The modern staircase design climbs to a narrow mezzanine landing, where access to the master bedroom is made via a wall of glass sliding doors.
A glass roof gives the shower room a bright and open outdoor shower feel. A rustic ladder shelf complements another attractive stone feature wall that wraps the wet zone.
A ground floor guest bedroom looks out upon the entry courtyard. A wooden bureau is teamed with a small wall mirror to fashion a flexible space that can be used for either writing tasks or as a dressing table. On top of the traditional unit, a glass vase filled with flowers creates a homely touch.
Upstairs in the mezzanine bedroom, the stone headboard feature wall continues seamlessly into the ensuite bathroom design, which is separated by a clear glass wall. The glazed wall admits natural light into the room and increases visual space. The daylight filters through an eye-catching terracotta block bathroom wall that creates a pattern of arches.
The bedroom is minimal but serves the homeowners needs most adequately
Back out on the mezzanine landing, a traditional lounge chair is tucked into a disused nook to create a cosy reading area.
Ground floor plan, showing the compact open plan living space with kitchen and dining areas, plus two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The courtyard design behind the fence gate was designed to promote an intimate atmosphere that would evoke memories of childhood for the retired couple. Reclaimed plain clay tiles and blocks of baked bricks were assembled to draw parallels with traditional houses in the countryside, and paint a restful palette of earthy brown tones.
Mezzanine floor level with landing area and sliding glass wall access to the master bedroom and ensuite bathroom.
Section drawing, showing the rustic contrast of stone, wood, concrete, and nostalgic clay roofing tiles. The bricks that were reclaimed from old houses served the new house with a traditional colour palette. The material palette built a familiarity that helped settle the elderly homeowners in their new surroundings. This diagram also illustrates how the sun path influenced the fenestration, and how ventilation mapping created ultimate comfort within the home.

Asian influence adds a different flavour to these three chic mid century modern home interiors, communicating a worldly sophistication. Along with Asian styling, there comes an inviting balance between minimalism and cosy comfort that shapes practical, restful living spaces. Shades of cream, beige and warm whites instil a sense of serenity that unwinds the mind and quietens the senses, whilst punchy black elements anchor a modern vibe. There is also a green accent theme that punctuates each of these welcoming residences, appearing in the form of a statement cabinet in home number one, a plush emerald green sofa in tour number two, and the simple freshness of plant life in home three.
In our first mid century modern living room, an airy cream and beige decor scheme is weighted down by heavy black accents, which complement the Asian influences in the home.
A large area rug holds the different elements of the lounge layout together, meshing two different pairs of chairs and a modern chaise lounge together as one cohesive set.
A solid marble coffee table and an overlapping counterpart have been situated at the centre of the lounge arrangement. A series of decorative objects including candlesticks, coffee table books, a tabletop clock and an incense burner to complement and build upon the relaxing mood of the space.
A modern magazine rack holds reading material close by the couch.
An oversized pendant light descends low over the nesting coffee tables, adding dramatic effect to the lounge layout.
Black leather chairs have been teamed with a small side table and a neat floor reading lamp in order to fashion a comfortable reading nook. A bank of short storage units are placed along an entire wall of the living room to maintain peace and order in the space.
The kitchen is a stylish combination of rich wood cabinets that complement the mid century modern vibe. White marble finishes across the backsplash and the dining peninsula elevate the feeling of luxe. A curation of decorative vases interestingly adorn the countertop and open kitchen shelves.
A black kitchen faucet provides a final black accent onto the luxurious kitchen island.
A statement green cabinet provides an uplifting pop of colour behind the dining table and low hanging dining room pendant light.
A black table lamp adds mood lighting over the storage cabinets.
Another mixed selection of mid century modern chairs and stools gather around a study table in the home library.
The dining room pendant light design is repeated here as a pair, to light the full length of the rectangle table.
The concept behind our second home design was simplification and unification, which led to a minimalist interior design balanced with a cosy atmosphere. A series of uniform arches elegantly frame the living room windows. A colour palette of warm beige and organic wood tones complement the green views and a coordinating emerald green sofa.
The cream living room rug is lightly dappled with black accents, which tie in with darker elements in the room.
A black lounge chair sets down a spot to recline by the bookshelves.
The variety of materials and shapes is minimised to continue the comfortable and relaxing atmosphere into the dining room. Stone grey upholstered dining chairs gather at a rich wood dining table design, where a black vase provides a simple centrepiece.
Cabinet doors carry a complementary textile finish.
The crazed glaze flatware delivers a wonderful Wabi-sabi aesthetic.
The kitchen design was influenced by Asian simplicity and practicality. This emphasis on functionality led to a perfect wall of concealing kitchen cabinets that tuck away an integrated oven, fridge-freezer, and dishwasher.
A long kitchen island doubles as a breakfast bar.
An exceptionally long linear light illuminates the full width of the kitchen.
The core of the cabinet arrangement opens up to reveal an additional prep zone with open kitchen shelving.
In the bedroom, clean lines and subtle furniture shapes blend gently. Doors are absent within graceful arched doorways to create an aesthetically refined space.
The wood and warm white palette flows cohesively from living space to sleep space to create visual harmony.
Window recesses are clad with deep wooden panels to build a high-end finish.
In the bathroom, a small pendant light adds a warming touch over a marble and wood vanity unit.
Wood same wood tone finish characterises the bathroom storage unit and a handy stool.
The bathtub carries a fashionable slatted aesthetic to keep the home current.
Our final home tour begins in a large living room that’s filled with natural light.
A round rug cradles a minimalistic lounge layout that consists of a curved sofa design, Pierre Jeanneret’s Kangaroo Chair, and a wooden bench seat.
A circular coffee table neatly repeats the outline of the round rug.
In the mid century style dining room, a modern light fixture descends from a classical ceiling rose.
A small side table displays an unusual gorilla sculpture, which pushes personality into the stylish space.
In the kitchen, a freeform decorative wall mirror reflects a puddle of light from the large windows. A terrazzo island and an indoor plant introduce areas of fresh colour.

Well, we definitely do, and that’s why we are so excited to let you know about a major collaboration you do not want to miss. Omsom, a Kitchn editor fave for Asian pantry staples, has teamed up with Instant Pot to create starters and recipes meant to work specifically with Instant Pot and the Instant Pot Air Fryer — and we could not be happier. Introducing: The Instant x Omsom Sampler.
While at first glance, Omsom and Instant seem quite different, the companies actually have a lot in common. Fun fact: Instant was founded by a Chinese immigrant who wanted to make an array of cooking techniques easily accessible to home cooks of all skill levels. Similarly, the first-generation Vietnamese-American sisters behind Omsom created the company to make hard-to-find and lesser-known Asian ingredients more widely available for home kitchens. The result is a delectable pairing made in Asian cooking heaven.
The Instant x Omsom partnership includes starters for three of Omsom’s bestsellers. Perfect for braised chicken or cauliflower, the Vietnamese Lemongrass BBQ is a bold twist on traditional barbecue sauce. Spicy Bulgogi delivers a sumptuous balance of smoky, sweet, and spicy for braised pork and air-fried mushrooms, and Chinese Mala Salad packs a punch with Sichuan dried chili flakes, cane sugar, peppercorns, and more flavorful goodies, which are perfect for braised cod, veggies, and chicken wings.
The sampler pack comes with two starters for each of the three dishes, which will give you more than 16 total servings to enjoy. Order yours ASAP, and you’ll be serving up flavorful, comforting Asian meals through fall, winter, and beyond.

A bespoke bar has been fashioned around a central supporting wall in the living room of our first featured home design. A backlit wall unit stores drinking glasses under a soft atmospheric glow. Two unique modern bar stools give the shadowy hangout a designer edge.
Handwoven cane rattan lounge chairs, inspired by Pierre Jeanneret’s Kangaroo Chair, add an iconic design element to the cosy lounge area.
The seating on the opposite wall is a built-in bench design. The microcement bench merges into a window seat and runs up to meet the concrete staircase design. Across the room, a cantilevered dining table is attached underneath the bar.
The modern staircase design cuts a sharp silhouette out of the calm grey backdrop.
Inside the home workspace, a bespoke desk threads thinly across a huge window. The floor changes from polished concrete to a wood planked platform, differentiating the desk area from a music stage.
As we enter the bedroom, we are able to see directly into a crisp, open ended walk-in wardrobe design.
A floor bed is situated high atop a split level floor design, which is dramatically underlit with a ribbon of LED light.
Works of art shape a cultured setting.
As we enter into the second home tour, our attention is immediately grasped by a Wiggle side chair by Frank Gehry for Vitra.
The Wiggle chair joins a captivating combination of lounge furniture, including a deeply cushioned modern sofa design, a punchy black armchair and a monolithic marble coffee table.
Indoor plants add flashes of colour to the peaceful neutral colour scheme.
A wall of fully fitted cabinets fill the back of the living room with an abundance of storage options. The neighbouring kitchen area continues the sleek white, handle-free unit aesthetic.
A custom-made oak desktop slots into a tight niche.
A microcement countertop and oak drawer unit build a chic dining peninsula, accompanied by complementary two-tone kitchen bar stools.
The next home tour begins with a striking curved sofa design, which embraces a set of contrasting black and white nesting coffee tables.
A split level floor creates an elevated entryway from the front door into the living space.
A channel tufted upholstered bed forms the main event inside of the minimalist bedroom layout. Two different bedside tables and a single wall light complement the asymmetrical makeup of the bed frame.
At the opposite side of the bedroom, a unique makeup table is teamed with an unusual pedestal vanity stool.
In the second bedroom layout, a low shelf frames the space around the bed and cuts through two custom-made wardrobes. A low-hanging bedroom pendant light serves the bedside.
An earthy brown accent wall provides a warm hit of colour in the light home interior.
A tufted sofa backs onto the kitchen island in this home, which leads to the displacement of the breakfast bar. Instead of being attached to the central kitchen island, the bar has been migrated to the window wall where diners can benefit from the view.
Beige, white and black elements navigate visual depth and temperature.
The TV is concealed within a wall of clean white floating units.
A Japanese Chabudai style table shapes a ceremonial tea room.
In the hallway, a modern pedestal sink rises through a custom-cut shelf to form a hand-washing station by the entry door.
A dark moss green accent chair adds a spot of colour to this minimalistic living room, whilst the modular sofa keeps things light with soft beige upholstery.
A piece of modern wall art adds a rainbow aura to the adjacent kitchen diner space.
Behind the lounge, a one wall kitchen stretches out a deep walnut accent in contradiction to the stark white surroundings.
A platform bed with a modern winged headboard design sets a curvaceous theme inside the bedroom, which translates into two shapely custom floating units. One of the units is set low to hold a bedside table lamp…
… The second wall mounted unit serves as both a bedside table and a small desk.
Finally, we come to a home layout set upon a warm white canvas.
The Trinidad chair by Nanna Ditzel for Fredericia doubles up at a cantilevered dining peninsula.
Frameless interior doors stand flush within the walls.
A single, understated bedroom pendant light illuminates one side of the modern platform bed, where it spotlights a linear bedside unit.
A grey bed set adds weight to the warm white and wood decor scheme.
