2021 was the year of many notable anniversaries in the TV and movie world. It has been 20 years since Elle Woods took her first class at Harvard Law School and we first found out that Harry Potter was a wizard in 2001. And now, on Dec. 10, it will have been 20 whole years since “Lord of the Rings” first hit theater screens.
If you fancy your own visit to the Shire, one New Zealand hotel has recreated its own version of Hobbiton with two charming hobbit hole units. Located right near the iconic Hobbiton Movie Set, Woodlyn Park has designed a unique hotel experience that’s sure to delight any “Lord of the Rings” fan. While New Zealand won’t be opening its doors to vaccinated international travelers until April 2022, there’s no time like to present to begin planning your hobbit-inspired trip.
With round doors, windows, and grass growing over the top of the units, the hobbit holes are near-identical to those featured in the 2001 movie, allowing fans to fully immerse themselves in the magic of Hobbiton.
While staying in a hobbit hole may seem more of a novelty that will only suit hardcore “Lord of the Rings” fans, the units are a great base for any fan to rest their heads before heading off to experience everything that Waitomo has to offer, including the renowned Waitomo Glow Worm Caves, Mangapohue Natural Bridge, and of course, many of the trilogy’s filming locations.
According to Tripadvisor reviews, the units are clean and comfortable, but you should not expect five-star hotel quality. Each hobbit hole sleeps up to six people—there’s a double bed and two bunk beds—and features a large bathroom, kitchenette, and living area.
“We booked the Hobbit Unit for a family of four and loved it! Very clean, great check-in, and such a unique experience.” one person wrote, while another commented: “This has to be the most interesting place we’ve ever stayed in over many years, and I’m glad we did.”
