We’re putting the finishing touches on The McGee Home basement…

and we can’t wait to share all the spaces with you when the time comes!

After moving in and using the unfished space as an interview set for our Netflix show “Dream Home Makeover,” we started making plans for the space we’ve talked about for years. Complete with a skate ramp (Syd’s request,) a big cozy sectional for lounging and watching movies on the projector screen, a home gym, guest bedroom, and game space for the kids, our basement is coming together even better than we had imagined.

When we first moved in, Baby Margot’s nursery was the guest bedroom, and when we got the news that we were expecting, we decided to move the guest bed downstairs. It’s not quite ready for the finishing touches, but we thought it would be fun to share a little progress update!

Thanks to The Shade Store for helping us bring this space to life with beautiful custom window treatments!

The window treatments

Window treatments elevate every project we design, and the guest room was no exception! We worked with The Shade Store on our window treatments throughout the entire home, and they couldn’t have made it easier to ensure we were choosing the right pieces.

Not only is The Shade Store‘s ordering process seamless from start to finish with professionals to help you every step of the way, but they have countless options to choose from for any style. In this space, we went with their Ripple Fold Drapery in the material “Upton” and color “Wheat.” I loved that it was a neutral color, but has textural dimension and a subtle stripe. Because this room is in the basement, we decided to hang the drapes from the ceiling using the “Custom Track” hardware to draw your eye up.

Another great thing about The Shade Store is that upon ordering, you can select the perfect amount of privacy for the specific space you’re designing. Like our other bedrooms throughout the home, we did a privacy lining in this room and created an even more full and elevated look with a custom 108′ W coverage.

Complete with The Shade Store’s Baton rods in the “White” finish, this window treatment look couldn’t feel more right in this room!

The first step we take when ordering window treatments is ordering the swatches to get a feel for the fabric material. Pairing the swatches of the drapery with the liner material is a great way to visualize the final result. Sometimes we even hold them up to the window to see what they look like with light behind! You can order free swatches from The Shade Store and receive them in 1-3 days, or pick them up in a showroom near you!

The finishes

With the help of Killowen Construction, we created an arch and built-in closet that takes you into the bedroom. Since the closet won’t be used daily, we did a hanging rod at the top of the built-in, and long drawers on the bottom for storing wrapping paper!

We used one of our favorite white paint colors – Swiss Coffee by Benjamin Moore, at 75% strength, throughout the home and basement, but we knew we wanted to do something a little bit different in the guest room. After going through a few samples, we decided on this mural wallpaper that brings just the right amount of dimension and sets the tone for the space.

To draw the eye up and make the ceilings feel taller, we did a tray ceiling and reclaimed wood beams that match our white oak wood floors from Lemco.

The furniture pieces

While we’re still working on finalizing all of the details, we’ve chosen a few pieces for this space, and we can’t wait to see everything come together. We’re planning on grounding the room with the Roslin Hand-knotted Rug, bringing in some contrast with The Sutherland Canopy Bed from McGee & Co., and softening the look with these round wooden nightstands.

We just ordered the new Pearce Chest from McGee & Co. to use as the dresser, and the prettiest sculptural lamps for cozy layered lighting.
