4th of July is my favorite holiday, and it’s the perfect time of year to host a party with friends, whether you’re indoors or outdoors. What does every party need? A photo backdrop! Make a simple patriotic ribbon photo backdrop that looks like an American flag to celebrate the 4th of July and take memorable photos!
Using red, white and blue thick ribbon in various patterns, you can create a very unique backdrop for photos that resembles an American flag with a homemade vintage, rustic feel. Create stars with paper and clear fishing line to hang over blue ribbon, and leave the rest red and white. Plus, you can either take down the ribbons after the holiday or store it away for next year!
- Rod and stand for holding the backdrop
- Thick red ribbon, patterns or solids
- Thick blue ribbon, patterns or solids
- White ribbon
- White cardstock
- Clear fishing line
Set up the rod in the area where you would like to place the backdrop, and ensure it is set high enough for standing photos (if desired), so about 6.5-7 feet tall. I used a photo backdrop holder, but you can also hang PVC or copper pipe. It’s up to you and what you can easily find!
Cut lengths of red and white ribbon about 4-5 feet long, and cut lengths of blue ribbon about 2 feet long. The number of strips is dependent upon how wide you want to make the backdrop.
Start tying alternating red/white pieces of ribbon from the pole backdrop. Then add the shorter blue pieces over the red in the top left corner to resemble a flag. The lengths do not have to be perfect at all.
Continue tying ribbon all the way across the bar until it reaches your desired width, alternating red and white ribbon variations.
Cut small, medium and large stars out of white cardstock using a stencil or a cutting machine. Poke a hole in the top – with a hole punch or a safety pin – and thread with the end of fishing line, tying a knot on one side.
Cut the fishing line to different, random lengths so that the stars will float over the blue ribbon. Tie the opposite end around the pole with a double knot and trim excess fishing line.
When it’s time to party, set up this patriotic ribbon photo backdrop for a fun piece of decor that’s also perfect for taking photos all day and night. Simply untie the ribbon when it’s time to take it down, and you can easily reassemble it year after year if desired. Happy 4th of July!
